Coach Vu Hong Viet is said to have resigned as head coach after the 1-3 defeat to Gamba Osaka in the group stage of AFC Champions League Two 2025/26 on October 22. This will put an end to the most brilliant dynasty in the history of the Southern team. The club's leadership is considering keeping him for one more match before officially saying goodbye.
The strategist born in 1979 brought Nam Dinh to the top of V.League for two consecutive seasons (2023/24 and 2024/25), breathing a strong vitality and rare pride into Thien Truong. But that halo is gradually fading.
The 2025/26 season has seen the team in a worrying decline. After 10 rounds, Nam Dinh ranked 10th out of 14 teams, just 3 points above the relegation zone. The loss to Gamba Osaka was the 5th defeat in the last 10 matches, with a series of inconsistent performances that left fans frustrated.
The defeat also exposed the huge gap in class and fighting spirit between Nam Dinh and its continental opponents. The heavily invested star cast of the team from the southern region has yet to show any signs of cohesion or the necessary courage to play on the international stage.
Statistics show that Nam Dinh controls the ball on average 60.1% per match, launches up to 13.5 shots, but they only score 6 goals after 7 matches, an unacceptable number for a squad valued at nearly 10 million euros.
