On the morning of December 1, TBM tunnel boring machine No. 1 - "Lightning Speed" entered station S12 - Hanoi station, completing a journey of nearly 4 km underground through the first 4 underground stations of the Nhon - Hanoi station metro line.
This is the first time the Capital has successfully operated TBM technology in a central urban area with dense population and heritage.
According to the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board, the "Lightning Speed" TBM will depart from station S9 - Kim Ma on July 30, 2024 and pass underground stations S10 - Cat Linh, S11 - Van Mieu before officially reaching station S12 - Hanoi station on December 1, 2025.

The nearly 4km underground journey was carried out safely and stably, with 1,720 tunnel lining rings installed, strictly complying with technical standards and environmental monitoring.
Speaking at the TBM welcoming ceremony, the Urban Railway Management Board emphasized that this moment is “a technical and management achievement and a symbol of the aspiration to modernize the capital’s transport system”. Putting TBM into construction in an area with a dense construction density and many historical and cultural heritages is an unprecedented challenge in Hanoi.
A representative of the Hyundai – Ghella Joint Venture said that the preparation and operation of the TBM was carried out “extremely carefully and scientifically ”, with the participation of a team of experienced international experts, ensuring absolute safety when the machine passes through sensitive urban areas.
During the construction process, despite having developed many response scenarios, there were still times when the drilling mortar eruption occurred. The Management Board representative sent thanks to the people around the project for sharing, understanding and accompanying.

The event of TBM1 completing its mission is considered a big step forward for the underground construction industry in Vietnam.
FECON representative said that the successful construction process has contributed to affirming the capacity of domestic engineers and contractors when coordinating with international experts, thereby creating a solid foundation for Vietnamese people to master complex infrastructure construction technologies. Parallel to TBM1, TBM2 - "Bold" - is continuing its journey to dig the tunnel to Station S11. The overall progress of the tunnel and underground station package (CP03) is currently over 72%.
The Nhon – Hanoi Railway Station metro project is a key transport project, playing an important role in reducing traffic congestion, expanding the public transport network, greening traffic and improving the quality of urban life.
After the TBM1 milestone, the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board affirmed that it will continue to coordinate with relevant units to speed up the progress of the remaining underground section, ensuring quality - safety - efficiency to soon put the entire line into operation.
