From early morning, at Can Thanh Park, hundreds of people were present to participate and cheer on familiar folk games such as tug of war, bicycle racing, swinging on a greasy pole... creating a bustling, exciting atmosphere.
At the same time, the ceremony was solemnly held with traditional and spiritual activities such as visiting the Rung Sac Martyrs Cemetery, the Rung Sac Heroic Martyrs Temple; the Can Gio Fishermen's Celebration Ceremony; the Whale Welcome Ceremony at sea and the ceremony to welcome the Whale Welcome group to the Whale Temple.
Sharing her feelings when attending the festival, Ms. Nguyen Hong Thoa, a tourist from Dong Nai, said: "This is the first time I have participated in the Nghinh Ong Festival in Can Gio. The bustling festival atmosphere made a great impression on me. I especially like the folk games and fresh seafood dishes, which clearly show the maritime culture of the people here."
According to the organizers, in addition to the ceremony, the festival continues to be attractive with a fair and trade exhibition to stimulate shopping; booths displaying and introducing OCOP products of Ho Chi Minh City and many localities; a culinary festival with typical seafood dishes and a series of artistic activities such as lion-lion-dragon performances, martial arts music, fireworks, etc., contributing to creating a cultural space imbued with the identity of the coastal region.
According to the People's Committee of Can Gio commune, the festival has been recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, the only traditional festival of local fishermen, held annually to honor the worship of Whale - the sea god closely associated with the lives of fishermen.
The Can Gio Whale Festival is not only an opportunity for the fishing community to show gratitude to the sea and pray for a favorable fishing season, but also an opportunity to promote tourism and introduce the image of the traditional, friendly and hospitable Can Gio sea to friends at home and abroad.
The festival takes place over three days, from October 5 to 7, and will create a vibrant and solemn atmosphere, connecting the fishing community in the typical coastal area of Ho Chi Minh City.
