Man United hosted Lyon in the second leg of the Europa League, after a 2-2 draw in the first leg. Leading 2-0 in the first half, the "Red Devils" ended the 90 minutes of official play with a 2-2 draw.
Entering extra time, Lyon, despite playing with one less player (receiving a red card), scored 2 goals to lead 4-2 and seemed certain to win.
But then Man United created a dramatic comeback when in just over 6 minutes, from minute 114 to 120+1, they scored 3 goals to win 5-4.
The aggregate score of 7-6 after two matches helped Man United win a ticket to the Europa League semi-finals despite many difficulties.
After the match, many "Red Devils" fans expressed their feelings that this victory was quite similar to the 1999 Champions League final.
United trailed for most of the game against Bayern Munich, but two quick stoppage-time goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ensured they were crowned champions in incredible fashion.
Coach Ruben Amorim himself also mentioned that moment after the thrilling victory against Lyon.
“I watched 1999 documentaries for inspiration for moments like this,” he shared.
Tonight was a great night. When we were 4-2 down, many people thought it was over, but that didn't happen here. I feel that at Old Trafford, anything is possible."
Man United are in a miserable form in the Premier League, finishing 14th. But in the Europa League, they are thriving. Man United are even the only team to remain unbeaten in European Cups.
After the moment Maguire scored the winning goal in the 120+1 minute, Mr. Amorim was overwhelmed with emotion.
"Old Trafford exploded and the sound was incredible," he said. "I understand the team is not performing as expected, but we have time to do something special this season."
