According to the signed contract, the repair and upgrade of National Highway 51 was scheduled to begin in March 2026, with a construction period of 120 days. After discussions with the contractor, it has now been agreed to shorten the construction time to 100 days.

To shorten construction time, the contractor is mobilizing a large workforce and nearly 200 machines and equipment to work day and night. Besides accelerating progress, the units are also strengthening inspection and supervision to ensure the quality of the project.

Along with shortening construction time, the units have also implemented many solutions to reduce traffic congestion on the route. Currently, the relevant units have fully installed the signage and traffic light systems, narrowed the scope of barricades, avoided spreading construction too thinly, and completed each section in a decisive manner.

In addition, relevant units have also strengthened traffic control and diversion forces at congestion points. They are coordinating with functional agencies of Ho Chi Minh City to organize early and distant traffic diversion to guide vehicles to choose alternative routes, limiting concentration on National Highway 51.

National Highway 51 is a vital transportation artery connecting Dong Nai province with Ho Chi Minh City, particularly linking industrial zones, seaports, and coastal tourism urban areas in Ho Chi Minh City. Therefore, the road experiences a high volume of traffic (approximately 70,000 vehicles per day and night, exceeding the design capacity by three times). Especially during the recent construction and upgrading period, traffic congestion and gridlock occurred frequently on this highway. Consequently, in mid-April 2026, the Provincial People's Committee issued a document to relevant units to address this situation.

Since mid-May 2025, Dong Nai has taken over the management of 37km of National Highway 51 within its territory. In 2026, Dong Nai plans to repair and upgrade the entire section of National Highway 51 within its territory with a total budget of over 660 billion VND. According to the plan, the repair and upgrade of National Highway 51 will be carried out in two phases, with the first phase involving the construction of a 22km section, costing approximately 360 billion VND.
