(PLVN) - The project to expand the T2 international passenger terminal at Noi Bai airport with a total investment of nearly 5,000 billion VND will be started and implemented by the investor and contractor in the next few days.

Speaking to PLVN on May 16, Mr. Lai Xuan Thanh, Chairman of Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), the project investor, said that so far, preparations for the project have been completed. "We plan to start the project this weekend. We are asking for a schedule from the Government leaders. If approved, we will start the project," Mr. Thanh said.

Regarding capital, the Chairman of ACV said that in addition to ACV’s own capital, the project to expand the T2 passenger terminal at Noi Bai airport will borrow additional commercial capital. “The project will borrow additional capital, but the commercial loan will be in Vietnamese currency,” said Mr. Thanh.

According to the investor representative, the project to expand the T2 passenger terminal at Noi Bai airport has a total investment of nearly 5,000 billion VND. The goal of the project is to increase the capacity of T2 terminal from 10 million passengers/year to 15 million passengers/year. “After the COVID-19 pandemic, international arrivals to Vietnam decreased, but the recovery trend is very strong. The expansion of this international passenger terminal is very necessary and urgent,” said the investor representative.

Currently, Noi Bai Airport has two terminals: T1, which specializes in serving domestic passengers, and T2, which specializes in serving international passengers. In 2019, when the COVID-19 pandemic began, the international passenger terminal T2 received about 11 million passengers, exceeding its designed capacity of 10 million people.

Realizing the overload of Terminal T2, the Ministry of Transport asked relevant units to study the expansion of Terminal T2. Then, ACV was asked to implement the project.

By October 2021, ACV submitted to the Department of Construction Management and Quality of Transport Works (Ministry of Transport) for appraisal of the feasibility study report on the investment project to expand the T2 passenger terminal at Noi Bai airport. This is a group A project, a special-grade transport work, with a lifespan of over 100 years with main structures such as reinforced concrete and steel structures.

After being expanded, Noi Bai T2 terminal will have 24 more traditional check-in counters and 24 automatic check-in counters, 36 check-in kiosks; 2 baggage conveyors; 15 jet bridges; 16 aircraft parking systems; additional security screening systems, early check-in and transit baggage storage systems; and pre-calculated solutions to add necessary equipment and technology to serve direct flights to the US.

The winning bidder for the above project is the Bac Viet consortium, including Vietnam Construction and Import-Export Joint Stock Corporation (Vinaconex) - Hanoi Construction Corporation - Xuan Mai Investment and Construction Joint Stock Company. In which, Vinaconex is the leading contractor of the consortium. The winning bid price of the project is over 4,600 billion VND; the contract implementation period is 660 days, the contract is based on a fixed unit price and a lump sum.
