When was China banned?

VTC NewsVTC News20/04/2023

Chinese showbiz is "famous" for taking strong action against artists involved in scandals in Asia. The first public ban was issued in the case of actress Zheng Shuang in 2021. After that, the China Performing Arts Association released a blacklist with nearly 100 scandalous names that were completely boycotted in the industry.

In fact, before the Trinh Sang incident, the cultural management agency of the billion-people country also took measures to "ban the underground waves" against stars who lost their morality and caused chaos in the entertainment industry. The measures to rectify the style and lifestyle of artists were implemented by the authorities more strongly and decisively than 2 years ago when showbiz was out of control and many famous people "thought the sky was the limit".

In China today, people who have influence on the public when violating the law, have behaviors and lifestyles that go against good customs and traditions, or deviate from ethical standards will be subject to punishments such as reprimand, ban from activities for 1-5 years, or permanent severance of artistic activities, depending on the severity.

Below are some behaviors that cause Chinese artists to have their professional rights suspended, according to Sina.

Tax evasion

Tax fraud is an economic act that has caused many Chinese artists to taste the bitter fruit of losing their careers in recent years. After each tax crackdown by the authorities, Sina reported that the showbiz industry of the billion-people country has witnessed at least one celebrity being erased from the star map.

The most famous is Fan Bingbing. In 2018, the actress was investigated for tax evasion and had to pay a fine of 130 million USD . The incident caused the beauty of Lost in Beijing to be banned from underground broadcasting for 2 years.

After strict regulations were put in place for artists involved in scandals in 2021, Fan Bingbing was deemed to have no way back into showbiz. The determination of China's cultural management agency was demonstrated by the actress being whistled and forced to stop selling goods when she wanted to use the livestream platform to make money and regain her reputation.

Sharing the same fate with Pham Bang Bang are Trinh Sang, Dang Luan and Vi A.

Prohibited substances

In August 2021, the General Administration of Radio and Television of China passed the Regulations on Control of Drug Problems in the Entertainment Industry.

The regulation clearly states that people who are addicted to drugs or involved in any form of addictive substances as public figures will not be allowed to appear in the media, participate in creating and producing artistic products, including behind-the-scenes work.

Film and television works by artists involved in drug use scandals cannot be broadcast, even on the Internet.

According to Sina , Chinese showbiz was hit by a drug storm in 2014, with dozens of artists arrested. Therefore, celebrities involved in drugs is considered "touching the forbidden zone" and will be dealt with without mercy.

Before there were clear written regulations, stars with criminal convictions for using stimulants such as Kha Chan Dong, Phong To Danh, Truong Mac... were completely "banned". As in the case of Phong To Danh - Jackie Chan's son - who has the financial backing of his famous father, he has not been able to return to the industry for nearly ten years.

Jaycee Chan once wanted to return to the industry through his work behind the camera. He became the director and producer of the film We Used to Love Each Other.

Not allowing Jackie Chan's son to achieve his goal, the Chinese mainland cultural authority refused to grant a theatrical release for the project. It was not until this team removed Jaycee Chan's name that We Used to Love Each Other was able to get the screening rights.

Deviant lifestyle

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of China and the General Administration of Radio and Television of China said that there is no tolerance for artists who disrupt the law and order, or deviate from the limits of morality. Therefore, those who have an unorthodox lifestyle, abuse their reputation and relationships to cause harm to others, and discredit the entertainment industry will be punished.

Zheng Shuang was criticized as a degenerate actress for abandoning her two newborn children. She also violated the law prohibiting surrogacy, viewing women's uteruses as commercial tools in China. Meanwhile, Kris Wu was considered a stain that would never be erased because of his degenerate private life, committing the crime of raping many young girls. Both were banned from broadcasting forever.

Li Yifeng and Li Yundi were removed from showbiz right after being convicted of illegal prostitution. For artists who committed adultery like Dong Jie, Li Xiaolu, Wu Xiuba, PGone, Wenzhang, Show Luo, used violence or were involved in serious sexual problems like orgies, secret filming like Jiang Jingfu, Huo Zun, they were refused to work with people in the industry, their careers ended.

Speak indiscriminately

According to Sina , politics is a sensitive issue, and one should not speak carelessly without fully understanding the content. With their influence, a sensitive opinion from a celebrity can also pose a threat to security. Therefore, Chinese artists are advised to be careful in their words and actions.

However, there are still some artists who do not hold back. As a result, they have suffered serious consequences. In the first two months of this year, Chinese showbiz witnessed three artists, Xuan Ha, Ha Du Tiep and Chau Tuan Vy, receiving punishments of being banned from speaking and performing for inciting public opinion at a time when the epidemic in China was breaking out strongly.
