Boiler collapse at Korean thermal power plant, 7 people trapped

(CLO) A 60-meter boiler tower at a thermal power plant in Ulsan city, South Korea, suddenly collapsed, trapping about 7 people under the rubble.

The incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. on November 6 at the Ulsan branch of Korea East-West Power Company. Firefighters said they had found two people under the collapsed area and were attempting a large-scale rescue operation. It was not immediately clear whether the two were among the seven people reported missing.

Two other victims were rescued earlier and are not in critical condition.

According to initial investigation, the collapsed tower was in the process of being dismantled using explosives, and the trapped people are believed to be employees of a subcontractor carrying out the work.

Presidential spokesman Kim Nam-jun said President Lee Jae Myung has ordered the mobilization of all equipment and personnel to rescue people, and asked authorities to quickly handle the aftermath of the accident.

Mr. Lee also emphasized the need to ensure absolute safety for rescue forces during the search process. South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok gave similar instructions to the Ministry of the Interior , fire department and police to control the situation and investigate the cause of the incident.
