The province of Cebu was the hardest hit. As the floodwaters receded, the extent of the devastation became clear: houses flattened, cars overturned, streets flooded with mud and debris.
More than 200,000 people were evacuated before the storm made landfall on November 4. Many returned to find their homes destroyed, while others began the arduous task of cleaning up mud and debris from homes and roads.
“The challenge now is to clear the rubble… This needs to be done immediately to both search for the missing and to allow relief operations to continue,” said Raffy Alejandro, a senior official of the Philippine Civil Defense Agency.
While Typhoon Kalmaegi left the Philippines' area of responsibility, weather officials warned of a new low pressure area forming east of Mindanao island that could strengthen into a typhoon early next week.
Kalmaegi is the 20th typhoon to hit the Philippines this year. It comes just over a month after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake in northern Cebu killed dozens of people and forced thousands to flee their homes.
