Son La province has many famous landscapes and relics such as Son La Prison, Moc Chau National Tourist Area… attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. This is the potential and advantage for the province to develop sustainable tourism, making tourism an important economic sector of the province.
The province's tourism potential also comes from its diverse and rich culture, typically the customs and festivals of the Thai, Mong, Dao ethnic groups... The stilt houses on the mountainside by the river and lake, the Thai and Mong folk songs... are imbued with the cultural identity of the ethnic groups in the northwestern highlands. Along with that are historical relics bearing the mark of a time of revolutionary activities of the Party and State leaders in the resistance war against colonialism. Son La's historical and cultural relics have been connected with neighboring tourist destinations such as Dien Bien historical tourism... Creating links to exploit and develop tourist tours and historical and cultural tourism routes in the region.
In the development process, the province always determines that the exploitation of natural resource values must go hand in hand with the conservation and enhancement of natural and human values, ensuring the development goal associated with the protection of the landscape environment and sustainable development, creating a breakthrough for tourism development. The province determines to make tourism a key economic sector and account for an increasingly high proportion in the province's GDP structure.

Son La province has been strengthening the innovation of state management of tourism, especially the work of building strategies, planning, issuing management policies, regulations, plans, projects... Infrastructure investment is focused on, including traffic infrastructure, information technology and tourism infrastructure. In addition to Moc Chau national tourist area, the province is building tourist clusters such as Son La city and vicinity tourism cluster, Phu Yen - Bac Yen tourism cluster, Muong La - Quynh Nhai - Thuan Chau tourism cluster, Song Da reservoir tourism cluster, hydroelectric reservoir tourism. At the same time, building a system of hotels, restaurants, entertainment areas and other services, building trade and service centers... to change the face of tourism in the area.
Many new tourism products and types have been put into operation and have achieved positive results. In particular, Son La province always focuses on and prioritizes tourism products built on environmentally friendly factors, with the participation of the community. Especially, priority is given to developing the strengths of cultural tourism associated with festivals, eco-tourism...
From the available advantages, the Standing Committee of Son La Provincial Party Committee directed the local tourism industry to promote the development of its strengths, especially strongly exploiting tourism sectors with potential to bring economic efficiency, contributing to the transformation of the economic structure, creating jobs and improving the lives of people, especially ethnic minorities in remote areas. Focusing resources on investing in and embellishing historical and cultural relics and scenic spots associated with tourism development such as: renovating and embellishing the historical and cultural relic of Hai Ba Trung Temple in Chieng Khuong Commune, Song Ma District; Tat Nang Waterfall, hot spring - Chieng Yen Commune; Nang Tien Waterfall - Chieng Khoa Commune, Van Ho District... Attention is paid to the development of tourist areas and spots in the province.
To date, the province has had 5 tourist areas and spots recognized under the Tourism Law, including: Ban Ang Pine Forest tourist area, Moc Chau district; Dai Yem Waterfall tourist area, Moc Chau district; Pha Din Top tourist area, Thuan Chau district; Golden Forest tourist area, Son La city; Hang Mieng Temple tourist area, Van Ho district.
In addition, the province focuses on developing tourism products associated with preserving and promoting the cultural identity of ethnic groups, focusing on building a folk art troupe to perform folk songs, folk dances, and traditional musical instruments. Developing products of excerpts of traditional festivals of ethnic groups to meet the research and experience needs of tourists such as: Kin Pang Then Festival, Quynh Nhai District, Het Cha Festival, Moc Chau District, Hoa Ban Festival, Van Ho District, Muong La District's New Rice Festival, etc.

Tourism products, areas, destinations, and community tourism villages are developed in both breadth and depth in the direction of promoting potential and strengths to build unique, different, and professional products, creating more jobs, increasing income for workers, contributing to sustainable poverty reduction.
Along with that, districts and cities focus on developing different tourism products, renewing products such as: Moc Chau district develops Ta So community tourism village; walking street - Night market, Doi village community tourism village, Na Sang tourism village. Mai Son district puts the historical relic site of Co Noi crossroads into operation in association with tourism development. Muong La district builds the product "Son La hydropower tourism - The largest project in Southeast Asia", develops community tourism in Ngoc Chien commune.
