On May 14, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) held a meeting to decide on granting licenses for domestic clubs to participate in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) club tournament for the 2025-2026 season.
The VFF Licensing Board has agreed to license 11 clubs that meet the criteria for Class A and B to participate in continental tournaments next season. Specifically, they include Nam Dinh, Hanoi, The Cong - Viettel, Hong Linh Ha Tinh, Cong An Hanoi, Thanh Hoa, Hoang Anh Gia Lai, B.Binh Duong, Ho Chi Minh City, Quang Nam and SHB Da Nang.
In addition, there are 4 football teams that have submitted applications to withdraw from continuing to carry out licensing activities and did not complete their documents within the prescribed deadline to participate in the AFC tournament in the 2025-2026 season, including PVF-CAND, Phu Dong Ninh Binh , Song Lam Nghe An, Quy Nhon Binh Dinh.
Notable among the above is Song Lam Nghe An. The team still has the ability to win a place to participate in the Asian Cup C2 next season, in case of winning the National Cup 2024 - 2025.
Currently, the schedule for the 2024-2025 National Cup semi-finals is set for June 26, with two matches between Cong An Ha Noi and The Cong - Viettel (Hang Day Stadium, 7:15 p.m.) and Song Lam Nghe An and B.Binh Duong (Vinh Stadium, 6 p.m.).
Based on the rankings of Asian club championships, Vietnamese football will have two places in the 2025-2026 Asian Cup C2 for the V-League champion and the National Cup champion this season.
In case Song Lam Nghe An wins the National Cup, they will not be able to participate in the Asian Cup C2 next season and this slot will most likely be reallocated by the AFC to another club in the East Asian championship.
This happened at the beginning of the 2024-2025 season, when Vietnamese football had Nam Dinh Club (V-League champion) and Thanh Hoa Club (National Cup champion) winning tickets to the Asian Cup C2. But then Thanh Hoa Club withdrew and AFC replaced them with a team from the Thai League (Muangthong United).
