The incident caused soil and rocks to completely cover the width of the tunnel , forcing the closure of the railway section between La Hai station (Dong Xuan district, Phu Yen province) and Chi Thanh station (Tuy An district, Phu Yen province). Before the incident, in recent days , it had been raining frequently within the railway area between La Hai and Chi Thanh stations .
After the incident, Vietnam Railway Corporation directed Phu Khanh Railway Operation Branch, Regional Railway Infrastructure Management Board 3 and Phu Khanh Railway Joint Stock Company to mobilize human resources and equipment to support the investor and contractor in resolving the incident.
As of the evening of May 21 , the landslide situation in Chi Thanh tunnel is still complicated, the extent of the consequences of the incident has not been determined and the railway between La Hai - Chi Thanh stations must still be blocked for repair and rescue.
Transporting nearly 2,700 passengers on 12 trains
Due to the Chi Thanh tunnel landslide that disrupted train operations, Vietnam Railways Corporation has implemented a plan to transfer passengers of 12 trains by car between La Hai and Tuy Hoa stations so that passengers can continue traveling. The number of passengers that need to be transferred of 12 trains departing from Saigon station and Hanoi station from May 20 to May 21 is nearly 2,700 people.
At 5:30 p.m. on May 21, the railway units transported the first passengers. While waiting for the transport, the railway industry will serve free drinks and meals to passengers.
At the same time, Vietnam Railways Corporation canceled the plan to run train SE9 departing from Hanoi station on May 22; canceled the plan to run train SE10 departing from Saigon station on May 22.
Vietnam Railway Corporation requests Hanoi and Saigon Railway Transport Joint Stock Companies to notify passengers of the interruption of train operations on the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City railway route due to the landslide in Chi Thanh tunnel and to adjust ticket sales plans accordingly; organize ticket exchanges or refunds upon passenger requests.
