Inappropriate use of antibiotics spreads drug-resistant bacteria

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên22/05/2023

The Ministry of Health has just issued a "Handbook on implementing the antibiotic use management program for district-level hospitals", applicable to all public and private medical examination and treatment facilities nationwide.

Notably, with this guideline, district-level hospitals will establish an antibiotic use management board to plan, implement and monitor antibiotic use management activities at the unit; evaluate and develop clinical guidelines for antibiotic prescription, monitor and evaluate compliance with guidelines for safe and rational antibiotic use for prescribers...

According to the Ministry of Health , using antibiotics appropriately prevents the emergence, transformation and spread of antibiotic resistance. Improper use of antibiotics not only directly harms patients but also indirectly harms the community, due to the spread and development of drug-resistant bacteria.

The rational use of antibiotics helps improve treatment effectiveness, minimize adverse events related to antibiotic treatment, reduce antibiotic use, prevent antibiotic resistance and reduce unnecessary treatment costs.

Vietnam has a national action plan on preventing and combating antibiotic resistance and strengthening the resolution of antibiotic resistance in health facilities, and issued "Guidelines for implementing antibiotic use management in hospitals".

However, according to a survey by the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (Ministry of Health) nationwide, medical facilities in general, especially district-level medical facilities, have not yet implemented many antibiotic use management activities, including essential activities to bring about program effectiveness such as building a treatment guideline system, periodically assessing consumption, implementing monitoring and feedback... There are many reasons leading to this situation, some of which are typical reasons including: not ensuring human resources; limited microbiology laboratory facilities; and especially the lack of appropriate guidance for the facility's division to implement antibiotic use and management activities.
