Using national domain names on the internet: A safe solution for network activities

Using the domain name “.vn” helps increase brand recognition, security and safety in cyberspace for users.

With the strong development of online activities and e-commerce, the situation of law violations in cyberspace has also increased with forms such as: fraud, counterfeiting, posting bad and toxic information, setting up general electronic information pages, unlicensed social networks, online gambling activities... Most of these violations are carried out on websites using international domain names.

According to statistics from the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC), nearly 90% of violating websites use international domain names. Therefore, the Ministry of Information and Communications (now the Ministry of Science and Technology) has developed the national domain name “.vn”. This is a fundamental solution to ensure the safety of network activities and Internet services in Vietnam.

Specifically, the Vietnamese national domain name is the identifier of websites on the Internet, with the symbol “.vn” at the end. This domain name is managed and provided to users by the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC), Ministry of Science and Technology. Compared to international domain names, using the national domain name “.vn” has more advantages when used due to its clear legal basis. When registered, it is protected by VNNIC, strictly confidential, so it cannot be stolen and ownership cannot be lost.

Mr. Tran Dung, Director of Vung Tau branch, Thien Nam Elevator Joint Stock Company, said that the company uses the national domain name “.vn” to increase the effectiveness of brand promotion because users and customers in need will find the company’s website more easily thanks to Google’s algorithm. “Along with that, we are also more assured about the security and legal rights of the company in cyberspace when using the national domain name,” said Mr. Dung.

Promote the use of “.vn” domain names

According to Mr. Le Viet Trung, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology, the national digital transformation program and the strategy for developing the digital economy and digital society in the province determine that each citizen is a digital entrepreneur. Each enterprise is a digital enterprise that applies digital technology to do business in cyberspace, and promoting the use of national domain names is an important task.

To implement this strategy, the Provincial People's Committee has issued a plan to implement the "Program to promote and support people, businesses, and business households to have a reliable and safe online presence with digital services using national domain names". Accordingly, 2 years of free use of the domain name "biz.vn" and digital services (website, email) for newly established enterprises within 1 year and individual business households with business registration certificates; the domain name "id.vn" and digital services for Vietnamese citizens aged 18 to 23.

In Ba Ria-Vung Tau, individuals and businesses can register the domain name “.vn” at the Department of Science and Technology via the address brvtitc.vn or the linked website pavietnam.vn. As of February 2025, the province has nearly 5,300 websites of organizations and businesses using the domain name “.vn” registered. Compared to other localities, the rate of websites with this domain name per 1,000 people is low. This poses many potential risks of insecurity in cyberspace as well as domain name disputes related to the brands of organizations and businesses.

Agencies and organizations also provide support and guidance to people and businesses on how to register and use the domain names “biz.vn”, “id.vn”, digital services (website, email) to have an online presence, build a brand on the Internet environment through the network of youth union members, community digital technology groups; coordinate to deploy training and seminars for people and businesses on how to register and use the domain names “biz.vn”, “id.vn”, as well as on online information security and confidentiality.

The province aims to have 7,000 “.vn” domain names registered by the end of 2025; support 50% of small and medium enterprises to have websites with national domain names.
