DTO - According to the recommendations of the professional sector, patients who want to use drugs or products of traditional medicine origin (TM) need to be examined and consulted by a specialist. However, in reality, there are still many cases of patients using TM drugs incorrectly, leaving behind unfortunate consequences.

Suffering from a herniated disc that caused nerve compression, Ms. Phan Thi Xoàn (66 years old) in Phu Hiep commune, Tam Nong district suffered from pain, fatigue, and joint pain for many years. Ms. Xoàn's son bought medicine for her according to the instructions of an acquaintance. However, taking the medicine did not seem to be effective, only seeing the consequences of affecting the liver and kidneys because the effects of the medicine were not labeled or had no origin.

Similar to Ms. Xoàn, patient Le Thanh Nha (27 years old), residing in Chau Doc City, An Giang Province, has had muscular dystrophy since he was 11 years old. According to doctors, this case cannot be cured completely. However, because she loves her son, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu (Nha's mother) tries to take care of him no matter what anyone tells her, despite her difficult family situation. With the mentality of "when sick, pray to all directions", following the instructions of an acquaintance, Ms. Thu bought medicine of unknown origin and source for her son to take for a long time (5-6 years), leading to cracked skin all over his body and continuous discharge. Fortunately, when she took her son to the hospital and was explained by the doctors, she understood the harms of abusing and using medicine of unknown origin and uses.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu said: “At first, I took my child to the hospital for examination. Knowing that this disease could not be cured, I went to a “hermit” for medicine and a lemon massage. After taking it, I saw that my child’s skin was cracked all over and yellow fluid was oozing out. I took my child to the hospital for treatment. Now my child’s health is better.”

These are just two of many cases of people following the instructions of acquaintances to use drugs incorrectly, or abusing drugs in treatment without consulting or following the doctor's instructions. And the consequences for health are different for each person.

Specialist Doctor I Doan Huu examines patient Phan Thi Xoàn

According to specialist I Doan Huu Hoc - Head of the Examination Department, Dong Thap Traditional Medicine Hospital, patients often make very serious mistakes in taking the wrong medicine. For example, Mrs. A has sciatica, she gives her prescription to Mrs. B, so Mrs. B buys and takes it accordingly. This is very dangerous, because it will cause unwanted side effects such as: water retention, nephrotic syndrome...

In fact, there are still some people who mistakenly believe that using traditional medicine is safe and has no side effects, or use medicine with the idea that "if it doesn't work vertically, it will work horizontally". This is completely wrong, because if used incorrectly, traditional medicine can also cause negative effects on health.

Specialist Doctor I Doan Huu Hoc said: “When using traditional medicine, patients must be examined, prescribed medicine and there must be a harmonious combination between traditional medicine and some other medicines. It is possible to combine Western medicine techniques to diagnose the disease correctly and then combine it with traditional medicine better. In addition, there must be people who are well-trained in traditional medicine to examine and diagnose the disease so that treatment with medicine is safe and effective.”

To use traditional medicine correctly and effectively, according to specialist doctor Doan Huu Hoc, traditional medicine has many good uses, but must be used correctly and appropriately for each person's health and illness as prescribed to fully utilize its effects. Do not abuse drugs for a long time, overdose, do not buy drugs of unknown origin; need to store drugs properly and use the correct dosage according to the doctor's instructions. In particular, do not use or apply traditional medicine on open wounds when you do not know clearly its uses.
