Up to now, all treatment costs for baby GTS, including surgery and advanced techniques, have been covered by the Health Insurance Fund, the National Children's Hospital, and benefactors through the hospital's Social Work Department.
The incident involving GTS's family that happened on June 13 was shared on social media.
At this time, a driver named T. was on his way from Hanoi to his hometown, when he reached the turnoff to Noi Bai - Lao Cai highway, he saw two people (one male, one female) carrying sacks walking in the hot sun.
Mr. T. stopped the car to ask, and learned that they were trying to get to Lao Cai, so he gave them a ride. As soon as they got in the car, the woman answered the phone and suddenly burst into tears. They were the aunt and the nephew. The woman took her young child to the National Children's Hospital for treatment.
On the way back, the two took a motorbike taxi via an app from the National Children's Hospital to My Dinh bus station and then caught a bus to Lao Cai. As soon as they arrived at My Dinh bus station, a motorbike taxi driver approached them and asked where they were going. After learning that the passengers wanted to take a bus to Lao Cai, the motorbike taxi driver immediately said that the bus had just left the station and offered to take them after him.
They accepted, each got on a motorbike taxi and chased the bus. After traveling a short distance, the driver told them that the bus was waiting at km23 of the highway, so they had to transfer to a shuttle bus to get there. The fare for the motorbike taxi was 700,000 VND.
The two were then transferred to a taxi and taken to the entrance of the Noi Bai - Lao Cai highway. The driver then asked them to get out of the car and said the fare was 4.2 million VND. Because he had no cash, the young man (the nephew) called his hometown and asked his family to transfer the money.
The victim could not remember the taxi driver's license plate number, but they still had the information from the transfer QR code.
On June 16, the two people went to the My Dinh 2 Ward Police Station (Hanoi) to work. They expressed their hope that the authorities would intervene to get their money back. The commander of the My Dinh 2 Ward Police Station said that the taxi driver had been identified and was summoned to the police station for clarification.
