People in Trung Son hamlet (Quang Son commune, Dong Hy) pollinate custard apple trees. |
Trung Son hamlet currently has 108 households, over 420 people, of which the number of Mong ethnic households accounts for over 90%. Most of the people here migrated from Ha Quang ( Cao Bang ).
We visited this small hamlet more than 10 years ago. At that time, every household in Trung Son was plagued by hunger and poverty. People could only live by growing corn for food. Because they had to depend on the rain, they could only harvest one crop of corn each year. In years when there was little rain and the plants could not grow, people in the hamlet still had to face food shortages.
In families, apart from essential tools for farming, there are almost no valuable assets. Some infrastructures of the hamlet such as: cultural houses, concrete roads, water works... have not been fully invested.
To gradually help people in Trung Son hamlet escape poverty, authorities at all levels of Dong Hy district have synchronously implemented and integrated capital sources from national target programs and projects to support livelihoods for ethnic minority areas.
At the same time, the district directed specialized departments and Quang Son commune to effectively implement the following contents: Strengthening the opening of scientific and technical training courses on agriculture; building economic development models in hamlets; mobilizing people to actively convert crops and livestock...
Quang Son Commune People's Committee encouraged people to boldly switch from growing corn to growing custard apples, because this type of tree is very suitable for rocky mountains. Moreover, Trung Son hamlet has many advantages when it is adjacent to the famous custard apple growing area in La Hien Commune (Vo Nhai).
Through Project 2037 on Socio-economic Development, Stabilizing Production and Life in Particularly Difficult Hamlets with Many Mong Ethnic Groups in the Province by 2020, people in Trung Son Hamlet have been supported to plant 3 hectares of custard apple trees and participated in many training courses on how to plant and care for custard apple trees...
Many people in the village said that if before people only grew corn, now most households devote most of their production land to growing custard apples, mainly Thai and Dai varieties. Through many harvests, it has been shown that custard apples grown in Trung Son produce large, sweet fruits, so they are very popular with customers. When the fruit is ripe, traders often proactively come to buy it at an average price of 25-30 thousand VND/kg.
Mr. Duong Van Chinh, Deputy Head of Trung Son Hamlet, said: The hamlet currently has about 20 hectares of custard apples, of which 15 hectares have been harvested. Thanks to custard apple trees, many households in Trung Son have escaped poverty. In addition, people also proactively raise buffaloes, cows, and poultry to increase income and improve their lives. Previously, 100% of households in the hamlet were poor, but now there are only 18 poor households; Trung Son strives to reduce 1-2 poor households each year.
Not only developing the economy, Trung Son hamlet also receives attention and support from the State to build many spacious infrastructure projects. The previously bumpy and rocky roads have now been replaced by smooth concrete roads.
The kindergarten and primary school are built spaciously and solidly. Children who come to school not only study under bright electric lights but also have access to modern teaching equipment such as projectors. The cultural house area of the hamlet has a spacious hall, a sports ground with a roof to protect against rain and sun...
The poor images of Trung Son hamlet in the past have now been replaced by fresh features. A prosperous and happy life has appeared when no family in the hamlet suffers from food shortage during the lean season. Most households have bought motorbikes, televisions, refrigerators... to serve their daily needs.
