Tragic bus accident in central India, nearly 50 people injured and killed

Local authorities said a private transport company bus plunged 15 meters into a shallow river, killing 20 people and injuring more than 25 others.

Nearly 20 people were killed and more than 25 others injured in a serious bus accident on May 9 in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Ravi Joshi - a local lawmaker, said the accident happened in Khargone district when a bus of a private transport company plunged into a dry river from a height of 15m.

When the accident occurred, the bus was moving on the bridge, heading to Indore city of Madhya Pradesh state.

The injured were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Mr Joshi said the death toll could rise as many of the injured were in critical condition. He also said the accident could have been caused by speeding.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the accident and said the government will provide compensation to the families of those killed and injured.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also said the state government would compensate the victims.
