It’s been three decades since Toyota introduced the Tacoma pickup truck, and 20 years since it’s been the best-selling vehicle in its class. Looking at the past, it seems Toyota wants to maintain that position, and the changes to the truck for 2026 could help. The 2026 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck is still in its fourth generation, launched two years ago, and continues to be built on the TNGA-F platform, the same architecture as the Tundra, Land Cruiser, and Sequoia. There are only two engine options for the 2026 version: a 2.4L turbocharged i-FORCE engine, producing 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. The EPA fuel consumption is estimated at 26 mpg (9 l/100 km) when driving on the highway.
The higher-end option is the i-FORCE MAX hybrid version, with a total output of 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission, fuel consumption averages 23 mpg (10 l/100 km). The higher-end option is the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, which has a combined output of 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission, fuel economy is rated at 23 mpg (10 l/100 km). The regular Tacoma trims will remain, namely the SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter, but some trims will see changes, albeit minor ones. There are also two cab styles: Double Cab and XtraCab (on the SR, SR5, and TRD PreRunner), two bed lengths (5 or 6 feet), and a choice of 2WD, part-time 4WD, and full-time 4WD. Starting with the least-equipped SR, the XtraCab now comes standard with a tow hitch. The more powerful SR5 remains the same as before, as do the TRD PreRunner and TRD Sport. The TRD Off-Road, on the other hand, is a different story, with a slightly improved visual appearance, featuring black front badging and 18-inch TRD wheels shod with 32-inch Goodyear all-terrain tires.
The SR5's equipment includes a multi-terrain display that shows inside-cabin images of obstacles ahead and below, Bilstein shock absorbers, and another set of 18-inch wheels, wrapped in 33-inch FALKEN WildPeak all-terrain tires, all of which remain on the floor. The Baja-inspired Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, as Toyota calls this truck, gets two new body colors for 2026: Heritage Blue and Wave Maker, the latter exclusive to this model. The standard underbody protection system adds rear rollover points. The truck will continue to be equipped with a series of TRD accessories, including FOX QS3 shock absorbers, air intakes and dual exhausts. The 20-inch LED light bar integrated into the grille is once again the highlight at the front of the vehicle, along with 18-inch black alloy wheels with 33-inch Goodyear tires creating a seamless connection with the road surface. Designed specifically for off-roading, the 2026 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter features a mix of off-road components, including 2.5-inch Old Man Emu forged monotube shocks, a high-mounted air intake, and 33-inch Goodyear all-terrain tires wrapped around 18-inch bronze-colored wheels.
Finally, the updated Tacoma Limited trim is the one that benefits the most mechanically, as the Japanese automaker’s adaptive variable suspension (AVS) now comes standard. This technology is used to continuously adjust damping force via an integrated actuator, resulting in a smoother ride. The changes described above are accompanied by new color options across the board, including Heritage Blue, which replaces Blue Crush Metallic, Mudbath, and even Supersonic Red and Wind Chill Pearl. The truck’s towing capacity remains the same as before, meaning in its most powerful configuration, the 2026 Tacoma can tow 6,500 pounds (2,948 kg) and carry a maximum payload of 1,705 pounds (773 kg). Toyota says the new version of the pickup will be available this winter. As for the starting price of the new Tacoma, Toyota has set a starting price of $32,145 for the base SR version. The top-of-the-line TRD Pro version is even more expensive, with a list price of $64,350.
