From propaganda on the loudspeaker system, training classes, to distributing leaflets instructing on how to handle and prevent drowning for households, especially those living near rivers, streams, ponds, especially on the Thac Mo Hydropower Reservoir, where there are many potential risks of drowning accidents.
Local authorities promote prevention of child drowning accidents for people living on Thac Mo Hydropower Reservoir
Ms. Nguyen Van An in Bu Tam village said: Every time summer comes, I am very worried. Because the children here mainly live on rafts, and this year there has been heavy rain and storms, I am very scared. We always have to be careful and watch the children regularly. Even if some children know how to swim, we cannot be subjective. In addition, local authorities and village chiefs also regularly come down to propagate and instruct on how to prevent drowning in children so that children can play safely.
“I have lived in Phuoc Minh commune, on the Thac Mo Hydropower Reservoir, for many years. Thanks to the local authorities’ regular propaganda and guidance on how to prevent and combat child drowning, I understand the dangers. My family and many other households here have been reminded to wear life jackets, keep an eye on children, and comply with regulations when traveling on the lake to avoid unfortunate accidents,” said Ms. Pham Thi Tien in Bu Tam village.
Not only propaganda, Phuoc Minh commune also coordinates to open swimming classes for children to equip them with life skills, helping them protect themselves when playing in the summer. Nguyen Thi Linh in Binh Giai village said: I was taught swimming by uncles and aunts and instructed on how to prevent drowning, reminded not to bathe in rivers and streams or play near ponds and lakes without adults; if I see a friend in trouble, I should call an adult for help. Thanks to that, I know how to protect myself and not drown.
Phuoc Minh is a land of many ponds, lakes, rivers and streams, always posing a risk of drowning as the locality has nearly 2,000 children, of whom nearly 100 children are living on the Thac Mo Hydropower Reservoir. To minimize the risk of unfortunate accidents, the locality has also coordinated to deploy many solutions to prevent and combat drowning.
Mr. Bui Ngoc Thuy, Vice Chairman of Phuoc Minh Commune People's Committee, said: We identify propaganda as the first but very important step. The commune prioritizes direct communication in residential areas, especially households living near ponds, lakes, rivers and streams, especially households living on Thac Mo Hydropower Reservoir. In addition, regularly inspecting areas of the reservoir with potential risks, prone to drowning accidents, as well as launching the movement "All people teach children to swim" in the commune. Mobilizing families to propagate to children to understand that they should not bathe or play near ponds, lakes, rivers and streams without adults. Schools also regularly coordinate to organize thematic activities associated with many useful recreational activities for children during the summer to avoid drowning accidents.
Strengthening propaganda and raising awareness of drowning prevention is not only the immediate task of the locality but also the long-term responsibility of the whole community. Therefore, each of us needs to have skills to prevent and combat drowning accidents. In particular, parents should always remind and manage their children to stay away from places with potential drowning risks, helping them have a safe, joyful and rewarding summer.
