From 2008 to 2016, implementing the Project to increase the density and enhance national border markers, Vietnam and Laos coordinated to identify and build 905 locations, corresponding to 1,002 markers and stakes (not including 2 markers at the border junction with China and Cambodia).
Increasing and renovating border markers between Vietnam and Laos is an important cooperation activity between the two countries to manage and protect the common border, ensuring security and territorial sovereignty of both countries. This is part of the bilateral agreements related to the construction, renovation, and management of the border marker system. The construction of additional markers and renovation of old markers helps to clearly define the national border, thereby minimizing territorial disputes. Increasing and renovating border markers is not only a technical issue but also has profound political and diplomatic significance, demonstrating the spirit of mutual respect, solidarity and cooperation between Vietnam and Laos. This is also an important step in ensuring sustainable development and peace in the Southeast Asian region.
The clear identification of national border markers is the foundation for the development of trade, commerce and investment between the two sides. This can promote the economy of the border area, create job opportunities and improve the lives of the people. The project also opens up opportunities for increased cultural exchange between the people of the two countries, creating conditions for learning and understanding each other. The restoration of national border markers also contributes to the protection of sensitive ecological areas, thereby helping to conserve the natural resources of the two countries. Cooperation in the management and protection of border resources will help both sides develop sustainably. The project contributes to raising people's awareness of the importance of national borders, thereby encouraging them to actively participate in the work of protecting territorial sovereignty. Organizing propaganda programs on the meaning of national border markers will help the community better understand their responsibility in maintaining security and order in the border area. The project can help update and improve legal regulations related to borders, facilitating border management and cooperation activities. The project to increase and enhance the national border markers between Vietnam and Laos not only contributes to protecting national sovereignty but also promotes economic, social and cultural cooperation. This is a necessary step to strengthen the friendly relationship, understanding and trust between the two countries, while contributing to the stability and sustainable development of the border area. During the implementation of this project, the two sides coordinated to organize 63 meetings at all levels, nearly 100 bilateral interdisciplinary working groups to access the marker areas and thousands of meetings and working sessions of the Joint Marker Planting Team, to discuss and agree on plans and measures to implement and carry out each item of the project. Regarding bilateral cooperation, Vietnam and Laos have agreed on the orientation of the border gate development planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, as a basis for the two sides to have plans and roadmaps for opening and upgrading border gates in accordance with the economic and social development situation of each country. Up to now, there are 33 border gates in operation along the entire route between the two countries, including 9 international border gates, 6 main border gates and 18 secondary border gates. In addition, the two sides have 29 more openings to meet the needs of travel and contribute to promoting cooperation and development between the two sides of the border... The functional forces of Vietnam and Laos regularly exchange, grasp information, and coordinate to resolve border issues promptly and effectively. However, on the border, criminal activities are still complicated, especially crimes related to drugs, human trafficking, smuggling, illegal immigration, etc., which have significantly affected the security, politics, culture and society in the border area. In order to maintain a peaceful and stable environment, maintain national defense and security, and create favorable conditions for economic and social development between Vietnam and Laos, all levels, sectors and localities in the border area need to strengthen and continue to innovate and diversify the content and forms of propaganda, increase the application of information technology, digital transformation, focus on propaganda in the languages of ethnic groups living in the border area and foreign propaganda on border work on land. Innovate methods of participating in building a strong and comprehensive border, in depth, especially in grasping the local situation; promote the mass movement to protect the border and landmarks. Further promote the positive results achieved in implementing tasks, ensure coordination between forces in propaganda and education work is close, timely, multi-dimensional, comprehensive.../.
