World gold price developments in the past 24 hours.

Gold prices have surged more than 27% this year, their biggest annual gain since 2010, driven by safe-haven demand and central bank rate cuts, although sentiment could turn more cautious depending on policy shifts under a second term as president of Donald Trump .

Heavy central bank buying, geopolitical uncertainty and loose monetary policy have driven safe-haven gold to record highs in 2024, taking prices to an all-time high of $2,790.15 on October 31.

Analysts expect the factors that supported bullion in 2024 to continue into 2025, although they also point to potential headwinds from Trump's policies that could increase inflation and slow the Federal Reserve's rate cuts.

“Gold is in a long-term uptrend next year, but it won’t be as monotonous as it was in 2024,” said Nicky Shiels, director of metals strategy at MKS PAMP SA.

“The peak of political fear has passed after Trump’s decisive victory… Central bank buying will continue at a similar pace in 2025, but flows will remain more cautious due to Trump’s tariff threat against countries seen as actively de-dollarizing.”

Bullion thrives in a low-interest-rate environment, acting as a hedge against economic and geopolitical risks. The rally lost steam in November as the dollar strengthened on “Trump excitement.”

“We believe the gold bull market paused after the US presidential election but will resume in 2025 as the US labor market continues to deteriorate, interest rates remain high, weighing on growth, and ETF demand continues to rise,” said Tom Mulqueen, metals strategist at Citi Global Markets.

Elsewhere, spot silver fell 0.3% to $28.87 an ounce, palladium rose 0.9% to $908.67 and platinum fell 0.1% to $903.15.

Silver is on track for its best year since 2020, up nearly 22% so far. Platinum and palladium are set for annual losses, down more than 8% and 17%, respectively.

Citi's Mulqueen predicts silver prices will rise to $36 an ounce due to large market deficits and Fed rate cuts through 2025. Citing headwinds to industrial demand growth through 2025, he does not expect silver to outperform gold.
