Training on interdisciplinary coordination between Health and Veterinary to strengthen the capacity of the rabies prevention system in the Southern region

In 2025, the rabies situation in the Southern region continued to be complicated with 11 deaths due to rabies and more than 100,000 cases of people bitten by dogs and cats requiring vaccination.

On June 26, in Tay Ninh, the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology organized a training conference on interdisciplinary coordination between the Health and Veterinary sectors to strengthen the capacity of the rabies prevention system in the Southern region by 2025, for trainees who are officers and employees working at the Department of Health, Department of Agriculture and Environment, Center for Disease Control, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine; Agricultural Technical Service Center, Veterinary Stations of districts, towns and cities; private vaccination units in the provinces of Tay Ninh, Long An, Ben Tre, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Tien Giang, Dong Thap.

Overview of the training conference.

During the training, trainees were provided with information on the rabies situation in humans and animals in Vietnam and in the Southern region, 2021-2025, by the Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City and the Department of Animal Health of Region VII.

According to statistics, in 2024, the Southern region recorded 26 deaths from rabies, and 567,189 people exposed to rabies needed to be vaccinated. In 2025, the rabies situation in the Southern region continued to be complicated with 11 deaths from rabies and more than 100,000 cases of people bitten by dogs and cats requiring vaccination.

Trainees were also shared with the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology and the Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City about related knowledge and professional skills, with many specialized topics such as: an overview of IBCM surveillance (an introduction to electronic reporting tools in rabies surveillance and reporting); symptoms of rabies in animals, screening methods; instructions on surveillance, investigation and handling of outbreaks in humans and animals, coordination of sampling and screening of cases of specimen collection; instructions on sampling, transporting and preserving rabies specimens in animals; biosafety when sampling and transporting suspected rabies specimens; instructions on prevention and prophylactic treatment of rabies in humans; practice of the interdisciplinary coordination mechanism of Health - Veterinary Medicine in sampling, surveillance, and the mechanism of transporting specimens in humans and animals; risk communication, before, during and after a rabies epidemic...
