The Pattaya City government (Thailand) has just announced a plan to deploy drones integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) to assist police in tracking down criminals and foreigners with overstayed visas.
This comes amid a series of recent incidents that have raised concerns about security at tourist destinations.
According to local news site The Thaiger , these drones will be connected to a central AI application database, allowing facial recognition in crowds and identifying people with wanted warrants or expired visas.
The device will be used at major events and tourist areas, helping authorities monitor and respond quickly when suspicious behavior is detected.
Pattaya Mayor Poramese Ngampichet presented the plan on June 9 during a meeting with Police Lieutenant Colonel Torlap Tinamat, Chief of the city's tourism police station.
"This initiative will contribute to enhancing the image of Pattaya as a safe and friendly destination for both tourists and local residents," Mr. Poramese affirmed.

Located about 150 km southeast of Bangkok, Pattaya is one of the most famous destinations in Thailand with its Walking Street attracting millions of visitors each year.
However, recently, this city has continuously recorded serious incidents that have caused public concern.
Recently, a Russian tourist was assaulted and robbed at night near a jungle. Police extracted images from security cameras and arrested two suspects the following day, according to Khaosod .
The incident immediately caused outrage on social media, with many comments from residents and tourists expressing concern about the increase in crime.
They criticized the government for failing to meet demands such as increasing street lighting, installing more security cameras and organizing regular patrols.
Many people think that Pattaya is no longer as safe as before, and tourists no longer dare to walk at night in the city.
In April, a transgender woman was brutally murdered by a Chinese tourist. Last December, a Thai national was sentenced to death, while two Germans were sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a German real estate agent near Pattaya in 2023.
Contrary to the government's expectations, some say Mayor Poramese's "modernization" plans are more form than substance.
In an open letter, long-time foreign visitor Alan French criticized Mr. Poramese for focusing too much on showy activities such as fireworks festivals, themed parades and flashy performances, while neglecting key issues such as infrastructure and public safety.
"This city is losing its identity," French warned, stressing that Pattaya needs to pay more attention to practical needs instead of focusing only on appearance.
