Thailand surpasses 23 million international visitors

VnExpressVnExpress16/11/2023

As of November 12, Thailand welcomed more than 23.4 million visitors and earned nearly 28 billion USD.

Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol confirmed the information on November 14. From January 1 to November 12, Thailand welcomed more than 23.4 million international visitors, bringing in revenue of nearly 982 billion baht (27.7 billion USD).

The top 5 international tourist markets to Thailand this year are Malaysia (more than 3.8 million arrivals), China (2.9 million), South Korea (nearly 1.4 million arrivals), India (1.35 million) and Russia (nearly 1.2 million arrivals). As of October, there were nearly 900,000 Vietnamese tourists to Thailand , according to data from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.

Minister Sudawan expects more international visitors to Thailand in the coming period thanks to the increased number of international flights and to avoid the cold winter. Temporary visa exemptions for five months for tourists from China, Kazakhstan and India, as well as longer visas for Russians, will contribute to the increase in tourist numbers at the end of the year.

At the beginning of the year, Thailand set a target of 18-20 million international visitors and increased the target to 25 million from the beginning of May, equal to 66% compared to the same period in 2019 when the country welcomed 39.8 million visitors. In 2024, Thailand is expected to welcome 35 million international visitors and reach 56 billion USD in tourism revenue.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) aims to create valuable experiences for tourists and increase spending rather than focusing solely on the number of arrivals.

To reduce overtourism, some popular destinations will have restrictions, some islands may be closed for a certain period of time.

TAT will continue to maintain the “Amazing Thailand” brand as well as target specific segments such as Chinese couples, Indian weddings, business travelers, digital nomads as well as health and beauty tourists.
