US federal judge Allison Burroughs on May 23 issued a temporary ruling preventing the Trump administration from stripping Harvard University of its right to recruit international students.

According to CNN, the ruling came just hours after Harvard University filed a lawsuit, arguing that the decision to revoke the accreditation of the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP - which allows foreigners to be granted visas to stay in the US during their studies) was "clearly retaliation" for the university's rejection of the administration's ideological policy demands.
Judge Burroughs temporarily postponed the government's decision and set a hearing for May 27.
Harvard University President Alan Garber called the court's ruling an important step toward protecting the rights and opportunities of the school's international students and scholars.
The Trump administration said on May 22 that Harvard University lost its access to SEVP because it failed to comply with requests the administration sent in April to provide information about international students.

US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also accused Harvard University of maintaining an unsafe campus that is hostile to Jewish students, promoting sympathy for Hamas, and adopting racist "diversity, equity, and inclusion" policies.
Mr. Garber denied the allegation and said Harvard had responded to the Department of Homeland Security's request as required by law.
In the lawsuit, Harvard University accused the administration of carrying out an unprecedented retaliatory attack because the university supported policies the administration did not like.
The administration's decision affects more than 7,000 international students and scholars on F-1 and J-1 visas and their dependents in the United States, according to a lawsuit filed by Harvard University.
According to Reuters, the Trump administration is likely to appeal. White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson issued a statement saying that "unelected judges do not have the authority to prevent the Trump administration from exercising its lawful control over immigration and national security policy."
Judge Burroughs was appointed by former President Barack Obama, according to CNN. She is also considering another lawsuit filed by Harvard University against the administration for freezing $2.65 billion in federal funding to the school.
