(Reading "Uncle Ho's Advice" by Nguyen Duy Xuan, Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House, April 2025)

Nguyen Duy Xuan is very passionate about the topic of Uncle Ho. Therefore, he has spent a lot of time, effort, and intelligence to research many books, newspapers, and documents of Uncle Ho and other authors, then pondered and absorbed them; from there, he reflected on Uncle Ho's thoughts, ideas, ethics, and lifestyle into life and people today.

Also because of that, unlike other authors who wrote about Uncle Ho who often used many lofty theories to explain, Nguyen Duy Xuan often presented Uncle Ho's actions, words, and thoughts as "mirrors" to reflect on specific, practical, and current issues, so readers can easily accept them.

For example, in the article "Ho Chi Minh - the great patriot", he helps readers better understand his patriotism through many of his actions and writings, from "The Petition of the People of Annam", "The Declaration of Independence" to the priceless "Will"...

He linked and highlighted the continuous flow of his patriotism through historical periods and that love was always “associated with love for the people - these two categories are organically linked in the traditional cultural ideology of the nation”. But not only “Inheriting that fine tradition of the nation, Ho Chi Minh expressed patriotism at a new height, carrying the breath of the times” (page 6). It was the “breath of the times” that gave Uncle a new awareness, different from his predecessors, so that he could choose the most correct path for the nation, make the right decisions, in accordance with the requirements of history.

Reading the book, we can also see more clearly Ho Chi Minh's vision in the relationship with the US. Since 1912, Uncle Ho set foot on American soil - the country that successfully waged a revolutionary war, gaining independence from the British Empire in the second half of the 18th century. That was a wise choice of a patriotic Vietnamese youth.

In America, Nguyen Tat Thanh had the opportunity to study the American Declaration of Independence in 1776; thereby, he further nurtured his desire to liberate his nation. The values of American culture and civilization that Nguyen Tat Thanh absorbed contributed to forming in him the idea of building a rule of law state in Vietnam later (page 105). Reading the book, we can also see more clearly that since 1945, Uncle Ho had begun to consciously sow the seeds for the Vietnam - US relationship.

When the plane of US pilot Lieutenant William Shaw was shot down by the Japanese army in Viet Bac, William was rescued by the Viet Minh. Uncle Ho personally brought the pilot back to the US 14th Air Force Command stationed in Yunnan.

Here, he discussed and discussed with General Chennault, Commander of the US Air Force in China, to establish relations with representatives of the US military. Thanks to that, on July 17, 1945, the US intelligence team nicknamed "Deer" parachuted into Tan Trao, bringing with it some equipment, helping to train the Viet Minh in radio and military techniques.

On August 29, 1945, Uncle Ho invited Archimedes LA Patti, Head of the Indochina Section of the US OSS in South China, to the house at 48 Hang Ngang ( Hanoi ) to listen to the draft of Vietnam's "Declaration of Independence", then invited Patti to attend the Independence Declaration Ceremony and the slogan "Welcome the American delegation" was prominently displayed on the stage. In early 1946, Uncle Ho met with General Gallagher - the head of the US mission in Hanoi at that time and established the "Vietnam - US Friendship Association".

From September 1945 to February 1946, Ho Chi Minh sent many letters and telegrams to US President Harry S. Truman and the US Secretary of State, requesting recognition of Vietnam's independence and the gradual establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Unfortunately, due to many "historical reasons", the wish for Vietnam-US diplomatic relations at that time did not come true (pages 106-111).

This is valuable historical information that not many people know. Therefore, when reading those pages, we will feel "new" and very interesting. Even more interesting is: on the occasion of US President Joe Biden's visit to Vietnam (September 11, 2023) and the agreement to upgrade the relationship between the two countries to "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership", it helps us see more clearly Uncle Ho's vision of the need to establish and upgrade diplomatic relations with the US.

The book also mentions many other issues about Uncle Ho's morality, ideology, style, patriotism, and love for the people, through the series of articles "People's hearts - national destiny" (page 53), "Close to the people, people respect, people trust" (page 56), "Our Party is morality and civilization" (page 47), "The core of Uncle Ho's morality is love for people" (page 59), "Learning from Uncle Ho, please take modesty and simplicity as the first" (page 79), "Learning from Uncle Ho, must look straight at the truth to resolutely fight, prevent, and correct mistakes and shortcomings" (page 86), "Uncle once warned about the story of "children of the powerful" (page 97)... In particular, the book also has a number of articles analyzing and interpreting Uncle Ho's patriotism, ideology, and morality from his own works: "80 years of Prison Diary - Poetry of a great soul" (page 112), "Uncle Ho's New Year's poems "The Lake was set to music" (page 129)...

All the articles in the book bring readers new emotions so that we can deeply feel Uncle Ho's love and his heart for the people and the country.
