Defeating his American opponent, Quang Liem entered the 4th round of the 2025 Chess World Cup

VHO - Vietnam's No. 1 chess player - Le Quang Liem just had an important victory in round 3 to enter round 4 of the World Chess Cup (FIDE World Cup 2025), taking place in Goa (India).

After defeating Georgian player Baadur Jobava (Elo 2,573) 1.5 - 0.5 in round 2, Quang Liem (Elo 2,729) met Jeffery Xiong (USA, Elo 2,649) in round 3.

In game 1, Quang Liem made full use of his first move advantage. Vietnam's number 1 chess player deployed a solid game plan, capitalizing on his opponent's mistakes and putting great pressure on time, before winning after 53 moves.

In game 2 taking place this afternoon, November 8, Quang Liem, even though he plays last, only needs a draw to continue.

With a big advantage from game 1, Quang Liem played solidly and did not let his opponent reverse the situation when he drew after 40 moves.

Defeating Jeffery Xiong 1.5 - 0.5, Quang Liem entered the 4th round.

This is the third time the 1991-born player has entered the fourth round of the Chess World Cup after 2013 and 2019. This is also the best achievement of Vietnamese chess at the World Cup arena.

In round 4, Quang Liem will meet the winner of the match between Karthiik Venkataraman (India) and Deac Bogdan Daniel (Romania).

At the 2025 Chess World Cup, Quang Liem was qualified to compete thanks to his ranking on the FIDE world rankings.

With Elo 2,729, Quang Liem ranked 13th in the list of 206 players participating in the tournament.
