In round 3 taking place at 2 p.m. today, Vietnam's No. 1 player Le Quang Liem will face off against 25-year-old American talent Jeffery Xiong (elo 2,648). Jeffery Xiong was once considered an American chess prodigy when he achieved the title of Grandmaster at the age of 14. He was also in the top 10 players under 20 in the world and competed successfully in a number of international tournaments, so he is highly regarded.
Le Quang Liem and Jeffery Xiong know each other quite well because they have faced each other in both standard and rapid and blitz chess. At the CCA World Open in the US in 2019, Le Quang Liem defeated his opponent in standard chess. And at the Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz Chess Tournament in 2021, also in the US, Jeffery Xiong was the one who defeated Vietnam's number 1 player.

This rematch at the 2025 Chess World Cup in India promises to be exciting and tense because the two opponents know each other quite well. The player who is well prepared both professionally and mentally, especially in handling the situations in the match well, will have the opportunity to win. The matches of the 3rd round of the 2025 Chess World Cup will be broadcast live on the YouTube channel of the World Chess Federation (https://www.youtube.com/@FIDE_chess/streams).
Le Quang Liem has participated in the Chess World Cup many times and his best results were in the 4th round in 2013 and 2019. He is trying to find a victory against Jeffery Xiong to repeat this and at the same time aim to go further in the 2025 Chess World Cup. If he wins the right to enter the 4th round, Le Quang Liem will "pocket" 17,000 USD (about 400 million VND) in prize money from the organizing committee, and if he stops in the 3rd round, he will receive a bonus of 1,000 USD (about 280 million VND).
