Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and Tan Thuan Bridge are vital arteries connecting the central area of Ho Chi Minh City with the southern part of the city. This route leads to export processing zones, industrial parks, warehouses, ports, etc., and has frequently been a major traffic hotspot in Ho Chi Minh City for many years.
In early December 2025, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City assigned the Department of Construction to take the lead, in coordination with the Department of Planning and Architecture, the Department of Finance, the Management Board of Investment Projects for Construction of Transportation Works, and other relevant agencies and units, to study the investment project to upgrade and expand Nguyen Tat Thanh road and build a new bridge to replace the existing Tan Thuan 1 bridge in accordance with regulations.
According to the proposal from the City Construction Department, the upgrade and expansion of Nguyen Tat Thanh road and the construction of a new bridge to replace Tan Thuan 1 bridge will have 6-8 lanes. An underpass will be built on Hoang Dieu road with a minimum of 4 lanes to separate traffic flows and avoid traffic conflicts.
The People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City considers this a key infrastructure project with a direct impact on urban spatial development orientation and transportation connectivity between the central and southern areas . Ho Chi Minh City aims to complete investment preparation and land clearance in 2026 and commence construction in the 2027-2029 period.

Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, approximately 2.5km long, stretching from Khanh Hoi Bridge to Tan Thuan Bridge in the former District 4 (now Xom Chieu Ward), has been a major traffic congestion hotspot in Ho Chi Minh City for many years.

Because this road is only 8 to 14 meters wide with 4 lanes, and has many intersections, traffic congestion frequently occurs, especially during rush hour.

Besides having universities and companies right on its frontage, this road also houses the headquarters of many agencies, resulting in a very high volume of traffic during peak hours.

According to statistics from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, this road experienced traffic congestion nearly 800 times in 2024 and is one of the top-ranked congested routes in the city.
When it comes to traffic jams and congestion in this area, it can be summed up simply: jam in the morning, jam at noon, and jam in the evening too.

The Tan Thuan 1 bridge, which has been in use since 1905 and is now 120 years old, will be replaced with a new bridge that has a higher load capacity and greater clearance.

The decision to expand Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, following the City Party Committee's Standing Committee's agreement to halt housing development on the 32-hectare plot of land along the Saigon River at Ben Nha Rong (formerly District 4) and repurpose it as a park and Ho Chi Minh cultural space, has generated great excitement and anticipation among the city's residents.

The People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has assigned the Department of Planning and Architecture to preside over and coordinate with relevant agencies and units to organize a competition for architectural designs for the area on the west bank of the Saigon River (the section from Ba Son Bridge to the Vietnam International Container Port) in accordance with regulations.

According to architectural experts, in the future, the Nha Rong Wharf area will be expanded into Ho Chi Minh City's cultural space, with a portion planned as a park and developed with public services. Therefore, upgrading and expanding Nguyen Tat Thanh Street is very reasonable and should be implemented soon.
