The worries of the Vietnamese team are about to have an answer.
The ideas for implementing the playing style for the Vietnamese team were shown by coach Kim Sang-sik in the friendly match on November 27 against Ulsan Citizen Club.
The Korean coach set up a 3-5-2 formation, with Khuat Van Khang (left) and Truong Tien Anh (right) as the two wingers. The midfield trio consisted of Nguyen Hoang Duc, Doan Ngoc Tan and Nguyen Hai Long, while the strikers consisted of Nguyen Tien Linh and Bui Vi Hao.
Vietnam team won 2-0 against Ulsan Citizen
Among them, the way Mr. Kim built the midfield is the most remarkable. Of the 3 central midfielders who started against Ulsan Citizen, Hoang Duc was tested in the striker role in previous matches, Ngoc Tan has just been called up now, and Hai Long is sometimes called up, sometimes not.
That shows that the picture of the Vietnamese team's midfield is still unclear. In each match, coach Kim Sang-sik arranges a separate midfield line, then observes the effectiveness of the midfield line in the way the play is deployed, controlling the match... As the AFF Cup 2024 approaches, the fact that Mr. Kim has renewed but not yet shaped the midfield line brings a feeling of anxiety.
However, with the midfield trio in the first friendly match in Korea, the competition for the central midfield position may be about to come to an end.
Mr. Kim's idea
Among the 3 central midfielders, coach Kim Sang-sik needs someone who can "count the tempo", can regulate the play, has good tactical vision, and the ability to effectively carry the ball to deploy the play through the middle axis.
Hoang Duc is the most suitable name for this role. Despite having a difficult period under coach Philippe Troussier and being relegated to the first division, Hoang Duc is still a rare midfielder in Vietnamese football with good shielding skills, ball control and effective rhythm control.
He was a starter in the last three matches of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers (June 2021) and became a mainstay under coach Park Hang-seo, playing a role in controlling the game in important tournaments such as the AFF Cup in 2021 and 2022.
Hoang Duc will have a place in the midfield
Although like his predecessor, Mr. Kim Sang-sik wants Hoang Duc to play behind the striker (or as a striker) to get closer to the penalty area. However, the reality shows that the player born in 1998 is still more suitable for the role of a deep-lying playmaker, where he can comfortably hold the ball to regulate and control the rhythm of play.
Supporting Hoang Duc will be a shuttle midfielder who can handle a large amount of work such as blocking, supporting defense, pressing or coordinating attacks. The model of a "worker bee" who works hard in the midfield can be seen in Do Hung Dung at his peak, now Mr. Kim has to choose between Ngoc Tan, Chau Ngoc Quang and Le Pham Thanh Long. Of these 3 names, Thanh Long is better thanks to his abundant physical strength and good football thinking.
According to coach Alexandre Polking, Jackie Chan has improved his observation skills and "plays football with his head". The experience accumulated in the national team under coach Troussier is also a valuable asset for the midfielder born in 1996 to be trusted.
The remaining piece of the midfield puzzle is a versatile midfielder who can move up to support the attack as a striker when needed (to switch from a 3-5-2 to a 3-4-3). Hai Long and Quang Hai are players who can fulfill this role.
Hai Long plays a good role
Hai Long is asserting his position at Hanoi FC when he is assigned the role of coordinating the midfield with Hung Dung, while pushing forward to bring new solutions to the attack. The ability to penetrate the penalty area and finish sharply has been demonstrated by the 24-year-old midfielder with 3 goals since the beginning of the tournament.
As for Quang Hai, he used to play the role of a free attacking midfielder in Coach Park Hang-seo's counter-attacking defense system. Quang Hai's extremely flexible and "weird" left foot helps the Vietnamese team create breakthroughs, especially in counter-attacking situations.
However, Quang Hai is not an easy player to use. In the system of controlling and deploying sequential attacks that former coach Troussier or current coach Kim built, Quang Hai has not shown any specific strengths. The 27-year-old midfielder has also only played at a moderate level for the Hanoi Police Club.
Positioning Quang Hai in the midfield is a difficult challenge for coach Kim Sang-sik. But if he can solve it, he will create innovation in the midfield circle for the Vietnamese team.
