After a period of learning and using artificial intelligence (AI) tools to serve their studies, many students admit that they are dependent on this assistance. Although AI brings great opportunities in personalized learning, it also comes with challenges in ethics, law, application capacity, and especially fairness in access to technology.
Many students use mobile phones with the Chat GPT software installed or a similar application. When asked, they shared: AI tools help learners summarize a large amount of documents in a short time or support analysis and solving difficult exercises that are outside the textbook program. For example, with Literature, with just one click, AI can provide information from an outline to a detailed, engaging article on any social discussion issue, even with diverse content, better than sample essays.
According to statistics, in Vietnam, about 15% of schools in big cities have deployed AI applications ineducation . In Hanoi alone, about 25%, in Ho Chi Minh City, about 30%. The subjects that use AI the most are Math, English, Science and Information Technology. Previously, in a survey by AI Education (Google) in December 2023 at a high school in Ho Chi Minh City, it was shown that 39.3% of 267 students used at least one AI tool to support their studies and complete homework. They learned about these tools through mass media or were introduced by their parents. The purposes of use are also quite diverse, such as: learning English; solving Math and Information Technology exercises; drawing pictures for presentations in class; finding ideas for projects; chatting with AI chatbots.
Recently, at the 2025 Student Startup Support Festival organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training in collaboration with Hong Bang International University, many students admitted that they are getting more and more immersed in AI.
From a teacher's perspective, teachers shared that it is not difficult to detect students using Chat GPT to complete their assignments, review outlines, etc. The most obvious example is in Literature, the quality of the writing and writing style suddenly become clearer, using more flowery and rich sentences; the writing style is inconsistent. When reading carefully and analyzing the coherence of the writing, teachers can notice a sudden change in writing style, like a patchwork of ideas and lacking coherence. It is worth mentioning that many students' writing is surprisingly similar; even when students use ChatGPT to do their assignments, they often have identical errors.
Students today have too many AI tools and resources, leading to easy abuse. It can be said that this is a generation "overfed" with artificial intelligence applications. Meanwhile, there is a gap in compliance with ethical rules, ensuring safety for students when using AI. On the contrary, students in places without the conditions or tools to access technology will be disadvantaged. Thus, if users rely too much on AI, they can become "digital slaves". This eliminates important qualities in the 2018 General Education Program such as: problem-solving ability, creativity, communication, cooperation, autonomy and self-study. Moreover, this situation threatens to form a dishonest and unhealthy learning environment.
For students, over-reliance on technology can reduce their ability to think and be creative; reduce their ability to understand and empathize with other people's emotions, due to the lack of real and deep interactions. Notably, ChatGPT can collect and store users' personal information - without consent, which will threaten privacy and cause information insecurity.
