In the final months of the year, as export orders in the footwear and textile industries rebound, production at many factories gradually becomes more vibrant. However, this joy is accompanied by worries about labor shortages – a problem that is causing many businesses to struggle to meet delivery deadlines during the peak season at the end of the year.
Over the past few months, the company has received additional orders that can be produced until the end of the year and even into the first quarter of 2026. However, unlike the previous period, the company is not signing any new contracts due to a shortage of workers. To maintain production, the company has been forced to re-hire retired workers and even hire workers up to 45 years old.
Mr. Le Huu Doan, General Director of Hong Bao Shoe Company in Hanoi, said: "Attracting workers is very difficult. The company's workforce is aging, but we can't recruit new employees. That's the current challenge for the company."
Workers in the footwear industry earn over 14 million VND per month, but recruitment remains challenging. The majority of workers in this sector are over 30 years old, making it difficult to recruit younger people. This situation is not unique to the footwear industry; it's also common in the textile and garment industry, where the demand for skilled labor is rapidly increasing.
Mr. Phi Quang Duc, General Director of Hung Long Garment Company in Hung Yen province, shared: "Attracting workers is very difficult. We have determined that we must retain our employees, and secondly, find solutions to keep them committed. In reality, businesses still need to recruit workers, but attracting them is very challenging at this time."
According to experts, in the context of technological transformation and labor restructuring, utilizing the older workforce could be a suitable solution.
Mr. Hoang Quang Phong, Vice President of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), commented: "There are businesses facing labor shortages, and they need more appropriate recruitment policies to ensure that they have workers, maintain employment, and continue fulfilling orders."
In the context of young, unskilled workers increasingly opting for freelance work, the footwear and garment industries should consider hiring older workers as a new recruitment direction. Many older workers are still capable of performing their jobs effectively. This would not only help businesses stabilize production but also contribute to income generation and poverty reduction for workers in rural areas.
