The iPhone 17 Air model expected to launch later this year will have an ultra-thin design, only 5.5mm at its thinnest point, according to the latest information from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
Ultra-slim design, no physical SIM slot
In a blog post on January 10, Kuo said the iPhone 17 Air will not have a physical SIM slot and will rely entirely on eSIM technology. This has been mentioned before, and it is possible that the entire iPhone 17 series will only support eSIM in more countries.
If the 5.5mm thickness figure is accurate, the iPhone 17 Air will become the thinnest iPhone ever, surpassing the iPhone 6's record of 6.9mm.
The iPhone 17 Air will be about 30% thinner than the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus; about 33% thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
However, the 5.5mm slimness at its thinnest point could imply that the body will be ultra-thin, but the rear camera cluster will be thicker. The device is expected to have only one rear camera with a resolution of 48MP.
Previously, there were many conflicting rumors about the thinness of the iPhone 17 Air. But some sources have agreed that it is between 5mm and 6mm.
The latest 13-inch iPad Pro is just 5.1mm thick, so the iPhone 17 Air could be getting close to that impressive figure.
Specifications and release date
Kuo said the ultra-thin iPhone will enter mass production in the second half of 2025, and is expected to launch in September 2025, alongside the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. There will be no iPhone 17 Plus, and the iPhone 17 Air will replace the Plus model in this year's lineup.
With an ultra-thin design, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to have lower specifications than the Pro models. Specifically, the device only has 1 camera on the back, is equipped with a standard A19 chip instead of the A19 Pro, and has only 1 speaker.
However, Mr. Kuo believes that Apple will still price this device high.
In addition, some other leaked information about the iPhone 17 Air's specifications said that the device has a 6.6-inch screen, 8GB RAM supporting Apple Intelligence, 5G modem designed by Apple...
