“In the submerged system, saltwater aquascaping is considered the most difficult and expensive,” affirmed Mr. Vuong Quoc (Ward 8, Ca Mau City), who has many years of experience in aquascaping.

With more than 10 years of experience specializing in ornamental fish and freshwater aquatic plants, in recent years, Mr. Vuong Quoc has begun to spend more time conquering saltwater aquatic plants. “As far as I know, this sport has been introduced to Vietnam for more than 20 years. At first, the price of equipment, fish, and corals was expensive, and there were few sellers and few people sharing their experiences. Now the price is more accessible, there are more sellers, and the experience of raising fish is easier to learn. However, compared to freshwater ornamental fish, there is still a big difference in difficulty and cost. Currently in Ca Mau, this sport has not really developed,” Mr. Quoc informed.

Tools that come into contact with saltwater lakes also need to use specialized tools to avoid affecting the concentration of substances in the water.

To raise a saltwater aquarium, the breeder needs specialized equipment to simulate the marine environment as closely as possible, such as: filtration system, skimmer, lights, wave generator, micronutrient supplement machine, concentration measuring device... The price of these devices can be up to tens of millions of dong, not to mention the high price of marine creatures.

“A tank about 60 cm long, to raise marine fish and sea anemones, seaweed, algae, snails, strains that are considered easy to raise and healthy, will cost about 5-6 million VND. If you raise corals, just counting the necessary specialized equipment alone will cost about 10 million VND, this is the first step condition, without which the following steps cannot be carried out,” Mr. Quoc gave an example.

Unlike freshwater fish, many marine aquarium fish have large color changes over time.

The diet of marine fish is quite simple, fish can be raised with specialized pellets.

“The most difficult and expensive thing in the aquatic field is coral. When you have conquered almost all the beauty of the submerged ecosystem, coral can be considered the ultimate peak. Because to nurture and develop the unique beauty of coral is not easy, it requires strict requirements on many factors such as: light, temperature, and concentration of substances in the water," Mr. Quoc shared.

In the saltwater system, marine fish, sea anemones and some types of seaweed, algae, and snails are considered quite easy to raise. When people have experience raising ornamental fish and have created a stable environment, they will be able to raise these creatures to live healthily. Therefore, many people who are passionate about saltwater aquariums choose to start with a tank that only raises fish.

Coral arrangement needs to be calculated to avoid the case of coral using tentacles (which are poisonous) to compete for habitat.

Measurement of dissolved solids concentrations should be performed regularly and adjusted according to coral growth.

Each type of coral has different light needs, so they need to be placed in the right location for them to grow well and look their best.

For nearly 2 years now, Mr. Day Tran Phuong, Dam Doi town, Dam Doi district, has been passionate about saltwater aquariums. Currently, he chooses to play in a minimalist style, with a tank full of fish or a combination of some easy-to-raise sea anemones. "I raise fish in a minimalist style, raising only fish is not too difficult. After mixing salt and stabilizing the microorganisms for nearly 1 month, I release the fish; the filtering equipment only uses a skimmer, the rest still uses the same equipment as freshwater fish," said Mr. Phuong.

According to Mr. Phuong, for those who have experience, starting to raise saltwater fish is not too difficult. However, this does not mean it is easy. Like himself, to be successful as he is today, he had to fail many times because he did not have practical experience in raising fish, did not understand how environmental indicators would affect fish, leading to incorrect handling when fish showed strange signs.

Anh Quoc concluded: “In my opinion, if you want to play saltwater aquarium, you need to find a teacher to learn from. That is the fastest and least expensive way to succeed in this subject.”
