Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio
Reuters on January 1 quoted Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio calling on local residents to evacuate immediately after an earthquake and tsunami in the western sea of the country, while authorities continuously issued more earthquake warnings.
Prime Minister Kishida instructed authorities to issue clear instructions regarding the earthquake and tsunami and to check the extent of damage.
In addition, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi also called on people to evacuate to safety after the earthquake and tsunami warning.
He warned that people should be prepared for possible further earthquakes. The Japanese government will continue to verify the damage and coordinate with local authorities, Reuters quoted him as saying.
The January 1 earthquake damaged houses in Wajima City (Ishikawa Prefecture).
In addition, he confirmed that so far no abnormalities have been recorded at nuclear power plants.
The earthquake with an initial magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale and a depth of 10 km in the Noto area of Ishikawa prefecture at around 4:10 p.m. (local time) on January 1 led to a tsunami warning of up to 5 m high along a 300 km coastal area of western Japan.
Tsunami waves as high as 1 meter have hit many coastal areas, while larger tsunami waves are forecast, according to NHK.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas in Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama prefectures.
Earthquake damage in Wajima city
NHK footage showed buildings collapsing in Ishikawa prefecture and tremors shaking buildings in the capital Tokyo on the opposite coast. Meanwhile, Hokuriku Electric Power Company said more than 36,000 people were without power.
Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority said there were no abnormalities at nuclear power plants near the country's west coast, including five reactors at Kansai Electric Power Company's Ohi and Takahama plants in Fukui Prefecture.
According to Reuters, Hokuriku Electric Power Company, whose Shika power plant is closest to the epicenter, had shut down two reactors before the earthquake for routine inspections and said they had not been affected by the earthquake.
