Delegates attending the workshop.
At the workshop, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, the Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute and related enterprises and units updated and provided information on the implementation of the Project on sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta region by 2030 (the 1 million hectare rice project). The results of the implementation and replication of the pilot model of high-quality rice cultivation and emission reduction in Can Tho to implement the 1 million hectare rice project, including the application of the alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation method in the rice cultivation process. Introducing programs, projects and rice cultivation models applying AWD that the Department of Agriculture and Environment of the city is coordinating with the Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute and related units to implement, including the project "Alternating wet and dry technology in rice cultivation adapting to climate change in Vietnam". Information on plans and orientations for replicating rice cultivation models according to the Project of 1 million hectares of rice and applying AWD in Can Tho city.
The workshop also provided time for delegates to exchange, discuss and share experiences and solutions to effectively implement AWD in rice cultivation, as well as develop a high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation model... According to many farmers and delegates attending the workshop, the application of AWD is very necessary and needs to be promoted to help rice plants have deep roots in the soil, strong and healthy rice plants, less lodging and high yield, reduce costs of care, fertilization, pesticide spraying and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
According to the Mekong Delta Rice Institute, through research results and measurements of greenhouse gas emissions from many rice field models applying AWD in the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop in Can Tho City, it has helped to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while rice productivity tends to increase, with an increase of up to 410kg/ha...
