Dark On November 26, at Maii Artspace (72/7 Tran Quoc Toan, Vo Thi Sau Ward, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City), the 9th exhibition Gieo dó sat gõ by artist Bui Chat (Bui Quang Vien) opened. The collection introduces 23 watercolor ink paintings on dó paper, created mainly in 2022 and a few in 2024.
This collection includes 23 watercolor paintings on Do paper, created mainly in 2022 and a few in 2024.
Dó paper - with its special texture and surface, creates ideal conditions for expressing with watercolors with the paper's fast absorption and color spreading. The artist can also create surface effects similar to oil wax or pastel when painting dry, just lightly gliding the paper surface with the color absorption of a soft brush with little water, giving a rough, broken feeling... and full of vitality.
Admiring the paintings at the exhibition, collector Ly Doi said: "The author has applied a unique technique, combined with a flexible brushwork, sometimes soft and supple, sometimes strong and decisive, creating watercolor paintings with an effect like oil wax. Although still using his characteristic artistic style, in this series of Gieo do paintings, Bui Chat's situational painting has been transformed appropriately on the new material of do paper, creating a strange surface, both in the direction of contemporary experimentation and reminiscent of traditional Eastern painting".

Perhaps in more than 20 years of practicing art, from poetry to painting, Bui Chat only cares about and tries to express the most core issues, always positioning his works on the boundary between art and non-art.
Regarding this exhibition, artist Bui Chat said: " Sowing do is a way of sowing art, sowing the author's spirit into the new material of do paper. Sowing do is also where imagination meets on the surface of a simple do paper, but it is also a symbolic space for the inner world , and this inner space is close to the infinite space of the universe that the artist creates for himself. And still in the spirit of experimentation, I think that when choosing art as the path, one must always walk, always experiment."
Gieo do is also where imagination meets on the surface of simple do paper.
Works on display at Maii Artspace (HCMC) from now until December 3
Researcher Ha Vu Trong added: "With the exhibition Gieo do sat gao, outsider artist Bui Chat returns as a regular part of his journey of non-stop artistic practice. The new series of paintings painted in watercolor and Chinese ink on handmade do paper of the Red Dao people are perhaps the most suitable materials for experimenting with abstract and formless paintings (Informalism)".
Before coming to fine arts, artist Bui Chat studied literature, then law and... wrote poetry. He has published 7 poetry collections. Artist Bui Chat has been focusing on painting since 2019 and is currently pursuing a unique style of painting called situational painting. (painting has no purpose, so it does not adhere to a specific idea as a goal of expression).
