Standing member of the Secretariat Luong Cuong was elected President.

Today (October 21), with 100% of delegates present in agreement, the National Assembly elected Mr. Luong Cuong to hold the position of President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for the 2021-2026 term.

New President Luong Cuong was born in 1957, from Viet Tri city, Phu Tho province; his professional qualifications are Bachelor of Party Building and State Administration.

He is a member of the 13th Politburo; Secretary of the 12th Party Central Committee; Member of the 11th, 12th, and 13th Party Central Committee; National Assembly Delegate of the 15th term; with the rank of General.

During his career, Mr. Luong Cuong was attached to the army and held many positions in the force.

From February 1975 to April 2003, he held positions at the Military Command of Hoang Lien Son Province; Division 355, Division 316 (Military Region 2); Department of Personnel, General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army.

Starting from the position of assistant officer, Mr. Cuong went through the positions of Deputy Regiment Commander of several units, then Deputy Director in charge of personnel, General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army.

From 2003 to 2006, he held the position of Deputy Commander for Politics and Secretary of the Party Committee of the 2nd Army Corps.

By April 2006, he was Major General, Political Commissar of Army Corps 2.

On the afternoon of October 21, 100% of National Assembly delegates present voted in favor of electing Mr. Luong Cuong to hold the position of President.

He then served as Political Commissar of Military Region 3 from January 2008 to May 2011 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in August 2009.

He also held the position of Deputy Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army for more than 4 years, from June 2011 to December 2015.

During the period from May 2016 to January 2021, he was Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army; Director of the Central Military Commission's Inspection Commission; Member of the Central Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption; Member of the Central Internal Political Protection Subcommittee.

At the end of 2014, Mr. Luong Cuong was promoted to the rank of Senior Lieutenant General. He was promoted to the rank of General in early 2019.

In early 2021, Mr. Luong Cuong was elected to the 13th Politburo by the 13th Central Executive Committee. In June of that year, he was elected to the 15th National Assembly.

In May 2024, General Luong Cuong was assigned by the Politburo to be the Standing Member of the Secretariat.
