This is one of the projects chosen by Vietnam Electricity Group and Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee to start construction on August 19, 2025 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the successful August Revolution and National Day September 2.

Up to now, the conditions for starting the project have been basically met. Specifically, in terms of construction site, compensation, support and resettlement of the project have reached about 73% of the land area to be recovered, of which the land area handed over to the investor has reached 23%.

The project is exempted from construction permit. The design and construction drawings of the main construction items (water intake, pressure pipeline, factory and construction road, construction power supply) have been fully approved.

The work of clearing and handling bombs, mines and explosives has been completed. The Power Project Management Board 3 has signed a construction contract for the project. The investor and the contractor have developed plans, solutions and measures to ensure safety and environmental protection during the construction process.

The Tri An Hydropower Plant Expansion Project has a total investment of over VND3,900 billion, including 2 units with a total capacity of 200 MW, and is on the list of important national projects, key to the energy sector. The project is expected to be completed and generate electricity by the end of 2027.

Upon completion, the project will increase the ability to mobilize capacity for the load in the Southern region, especially during peak hours, contributing to improving the operating mode of the power system. Thereby, helping to reduce the production cost of the national power system, maximizing the capacity of the flow by limiting the annual excess discharge; reducing CO2 emissions, reducing the working intensity at the generators of the existing plant, and prolonging the life of the equipment.

Tri An Hydropower Plant is the last hydropower step on the Dong Nai River, and is also the largest hydropower project in the South today. The project was built in 1984 and inaugurated in 1991. Currently, the plant has 4 units with a total designed capacity of 400 MW, with an average annual electricity output of 1.7 billion kWh. In addition to its main purpose of producing electricity and supplying the national grid, Tri An Hydropower Plant also performs the function of ensuring water for daily life, agriculture , repelling salinity and regulating floods.
