Northern hydropower plants still have to operate at a moderate level

VietNamNetVietNamNet18/06/2023

The Department of Industrial Safety Techniques and Environment (DAST) has just reported to the Minister of Industry and Trade on the operation of hydroelectric reservoirs on June 18.

Accordingly, the flow to hydroelectric reservoirs is low, fluctuating slightly in the Northern region, South Central Coast, and Southeast; the North Central region slightly decreased; the Central Highlands region slightly increased compared to yesterday.

Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant

The water level in the North Central region remains low compared to yesterday. The water level of lakes in the South Central Coast and Central Highlands regions is within the minimum water level range according to the regulations of the Operation Procedure.

The flow and water level at hydroelectric reservoirs are low, and the forecast of water volume to the reservoirs in the coming time is not high. Therefore, according to the Department of Industrial Safety and Environment, hydroelectric plants in the Northern and North Central regions mainly regulate water to ensure minimum flow, generate electricity moderately to ensure the safety of the generators during operation, making it difficult to meet the electricity generation according to the reservoir operation process at this time.

Some lakes are near dead water level: Thac Ba, Ban Ve, Thac Mo, Dong Nai 3; Some lakes have low water level: Son La, Hua Na.

Some hydropower plants are generating electricity at a moderate rate with low flow, water level, and capacity: Son La , Huoi Quang, Ban Chat, Thac Ba, Tuyen Quang, Hua Na, Thac Mo, Dong Nai 3.

Hydrological forecast, 24-hour water flow to lakes in the Northern, Central Highlands, and Southeast regions will increase slightly; North Central and South Central Coast regions will fluctuate slightly, at low levels.

The inflow of hydroelectric reservoirs is low, fluctuating slightly compared to yesterday: Lai Chau Lake: 255 m3/s; Son La Lake: 507 m3/s; Hoa Binh Lake: 406 m3/s; Thac Ba Lake: 76 m3/s; Tuyen Quang Lake: 253 m3/s; Ban Chat Lake: 280 m3/s.

The water levels of the lakes have exceeded the dead water level (Thac Ba Lake is close to the dead water level), the water level has increased slightly compared to yesterday (lake water level/dead water level). Lai Chau Lake 277.74 m/ 265 m; Son La Lake: 178.43/175 m; Hoa Binh Lake 102.61/80m (minimum water level 81.9 m); Thac Ba Lake 46.36/46 m (minimum water level: 46.5 m); Tuyen Quang Lake: 95.58/90m (minimum water level: 90.7m); Ban Chat Lake 436.77/431m.

Meanwhile, a report from Vietnam Electricity Group shows that, according to weather forecasts, from June 18, the temperature in the North will increase again and will maintain a temperature of 36-37 degrees Celsius for nearly a week. Although the water level in hydroelectric reservoirs has improved, it is still low and there is no information about flooding in the reservoirs in the North. Therefore, EVN said that it will still have to reduce electricity demand until water flows to hydroelectric reservoirs.

EVN expects the power cut in the North next week to be 2,000-2,500 MW. However, this is about 20-30% lower than the average cut in early June and half the cut of the peak day of 5,000 MW.

EVN: Power cut in the North 'at lowest level' next week Due to hot weather and low water levels in hydroelectric reservoirs, EVN plans to still have to cut power in the North next week but at the lowest level.
