(CLO) The Swedish Defense Minister said Ukraine is free to use Swedish weapons at will, including on Russian territory.
During a meeting with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov in Stockholm on November 22, Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson revealed that Sweden plans to allocate significant funds to mass-produce long-range missiles and drones for Ukraine.
Mr. Jonson explained that this funding could be done through the “Danish model,” in which countries would provide direct financial support to the Ukrainian defense industry instead of simply supplying weapons from their stockpiles.

The Danish model has dual benefits: strengthening Ukraine's self-defense capabilities and increasing Ukraine's domestic defense production capacity, creating a more sustainable and long-term solution for arms and equipment supplies.
For Sweden, adopting the Danish model offers a strategic advantage. By financing Ukraine’s arms production, Sweden avoids depleting its own military resources while maintaining its commitment to supporting Ukraine in the conflict.
In addition, this approach also promotes closer economic ties between Sweden and Ukraine, potentially opening up opportunities for cooperation in defense technology and production.
“Sweden stands ready to work with partners and allies to further develop Ukraine’s defence capabilities,” Jonson said. “Ukraine must have the tools to defend itself.”
The Swedish Defense Minister also said that Ukraine has the right to freely use Swedish weapons at will, including on Russian territory, as part of its right to self-defense under international law.
The move follows a similar initiative by Denmark, which pledged about $630 million in support for Ukraine's defense industry, money sourced from frozen Russian assets in the European Union.
Norway also joined the initiative, pledging to directly finance the production of Ukrainian-made weapons and equipment.
Meanwhile, US and European officials are discussing measures to deter Russia to ensure Ukraine's security, such as stockpiling a strong enough conventional arsenal.
