USDT is one of the leading stablecoins. Stablecoins are currencies developed on the blockchain and have the role of stabilizing prices, pegged to the value of fiat currencies such as USD or Euro. The US Department of Justice began investigating Tether several years ago, according to sources, initially to see if Tether backers had committed fraud by using forged documents to gain access to the global banking system.

The US Treasury is also considering sanctions against Tether because the currency is widely used by individuals and groups blacklisted by the US. The sanctions could include banning Americans from doing business with Tether.

Currently, the US Department of Justice and the US Department of the Treasury have refused to comment on the matter.
