Pork consumption is low, so why is the price of farmed pigs, the main livestock in Ba Ria-Vung Tau, still high?

Large-scale livestock farming, Hoa Hiep Cooperative (Xuyen Moc district, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) is maintaining a total herd of more than 2,000 pigs and sows.

Since the beginning of the year, the cooperative has supplied more than 1,000 pigs to the market. Mr. Mai Xuan Du, Director of the cooperative, said: "With the current price of pigs at 69,000 VND/kg, each pig weighing 100 kg will have a profit of about 1.7 million VND."

The increase in live hog prices also immediately affected the pork market. According to traders, the price of whole hogs in the market fluctuated from 88-92 thousand VND/kg, an increase of 12 thousand VND/kg compared to a month ago, forcing the retail price to increase from 10-16 thousand VND/kg, depending on the type.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nga, a trader at Rach Dua market, Vung Tau city, said that the price of lean meat such as shoulder, thigh, and belly used to range from 85-130 thousand VND/kg, but now it has increased to 95-150 thousand VND/kg; pork belly without ribs and baby back ribs range from 160-190 thousand VND/kg...

“Pork prices are high, while demand has dropped sharply, with purchasing power only about half of what it was before,” said Ms. Nga.

Normally, the price of live pigs for sale decreases in the summer, because when the weather is hot, consumers eat less meat than when the weather is cold.

Explaining the phenomenon of pork prices increasing contrary to the law of reduced consumption in the summer, pork businesses said that because throughout 2023, pork prices were too low, farmers suffered losses and reduced the number of pigs raised.

This has led to a sharp decrease in pig output, and the lack of supply compared to demand has pushed up the price of live pigs.
