In his final days, García Márquez wrote a novel while struggling with dementia. He decided not to publish it, and his family respected his wishes.
Now, 10 years after his death, his sons - Rodrigo and Gonzalo García Barcha, the heirs of his estate, have decided to release the work.
Titled Until August , it is described as "an extraordinary and profound story of female freedom and desire." The story follows a woman named Ana Magdalena Bach who visits an island on the anniversary of her mother's death. There, she explores freedom, regret, and the mysteries of love.
García Márquez is known for his magical realism writing style and is loved by fans around the world . He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982 for “having combined reality and fantasy in a richly imagined world that reflects the life and conflicts of a great continent.”
After his death in 2014, then-Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos called Márquez “the greatest Colombian who ever lived.”
Garcia Márquez with fans
With no intention of publication, the manuscript was stored with Márquez's other materials in the University of Texas archives for 10 years. Very few people knew of its existence.
Rodrigo and Gonzalo García Barcha, in an interview, shared: “ Until August was our father's last attempt to continue creating despite all the difficulties and illness”.
They also added about the intention to release it: “Rereading the manuscript nearly 10 years after his death, we discovered that what he wrote was extremely interesting, valuable and still captivates me because of the outstanding aspects of his writing style. That is the ability to create, poetic language and captivating storytelling. His understanding of humanity and his feelings towards the experience of misfortune, especially in love, have always been the main themes in all his works.”
However, the release of this new book has also met with a lot of criticism, with many people claiming that the heirs of the legacy are going against the author's wishes, and seeing the above action as just a way to generate income for themselves. This is also guaranteed when the film adaptation of the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude is released in 2024, even though Márquez never agreed to the adaptation during his lifetime. The film process was also approved by his sons, the heirs of the legacy.
Gabriel García Márquez's Until August is scheduled to be published in English by Viking, a British imprint of Penguin Random House, on March 12, 2024.
