Organ transplant miracle on national reunification day

On the occasion of the April 30 and May 1 holidays, at the 108 Military Central Hospital, a multi-organ transplant surgery was successfully performed, reviving the lives of three patients who were near death and preparing to bring light to two blind people.

Doctors at 108 Military Central Hospital perform an organ transplant for a patient.

Behind that impressive medical achievement is the act of a deceased person and the silent sacrifice of his family.

The donor was a male patient, born in 1968, residing in Hanoi , diagnosed with brain death due to a stroke, pontine infarction and severe cerebral edema. Facing the pain of loss, his family, especially his wife, still strongly agreed to donate his organs according to his wishes during his lifetime.

“Before my husband’s accident, we promised each other that if one day he was no more, we would donate his organs to save others. Today, I believe he is still living in the bodies of others,” she shared, choking up.

As soon as receiving information from the Stroke Department on the afternoon of April 29, the Hospital's Organ Transplant Center immediately took action.

By 3am on April 30, the patient's condition had worsened and he was diagnosed with brain death for the third time at 7pm the same day. Regardless of time or holidays, doctors worked through the night, coordinating with many specialists, screening and evaluating the organ recipient with the utmost urgency and responsibility.

On the morning of May 1, in the heavy rain and strong wind, although many doctors were on holiday or hundreds of kilometers away, the entire team was present at the hospital from 9:00 a.m. At exactly 10:30 a.m., the major multi-organ transplant surgery began: one liver and two kidneys were transplanted on the same day, and two corneas were preserved for later transplant.

The liver recipient was a male patient born in 1979 who had suffered from hepatitis B for a decade without treatment. The disease progressed to decompensated cirrhosis, causing the patient to become exhausted in recent months. A liver transplant was the last chance to save his fragile life.

Both kidney transplant patients were in the end-stage of chronic renal failure and had been on dialysis for many years. One patient had an exceptionally high immune response index, and was at risk of acute transplant rejection. However, the surgery was successful beyond expectations: just a few hours after surgery, urine output recovered to 250–300 ml/hour, a valuable sign of survival.

At 5 p.m. the same day, the three transplants were completed, the recipients were all conscious, their vital signs were stable and they were transferred to the intensive care unit for close monitoring. The two corneas were preserved according to the correct procedure, ready to bring light to the two people living in darkness.

Major General, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Huu Song, Director of 108 Central Military Hospital, emotionally shared that the noble act of the organ donor and his family not only revived life, but also spread faith, humanity and profound human values in the community. This is the most precious gift that medicine can receive.

Amidst the whole country celebrating the reunification day, at a hospital where the heart of the military medical profession still beats in the middle of a rainy festival night, a life quietly passed away so that many other lives could be revived. This is not just a medical story, but a sacred symphony of compassion, sacrifice and belief in goodness.

Hanoi strengthens inspection and control of drug and pharmaceutical ingredient quality by 2025

In order to tighten state management in the pharmaceutical sector and raise awareness and compliance with the law among medical and pharmaceutical establishments in the area, the Hanoi Department of Health has just issued a plan to inspect and monitor the quality of drugs and pharmaceutical ingredients in 2025.

According to the plan, the inspection content focuses on maintaining and complying with the principles and standards of “Good Practice” (GxP) at establishments producing, trading and using drugs. In particular, the inspection teams will assess the implementation of regulations on on-site drug quality inspection and control, including traceability of raw materials, legal invoices and documents, and pre- and post-production test reports.

In addition, the authorities will inspect the retention of records related to drug quality throughout the entire circulation and use process; the connection and updating of inter-connected data on drug purchasing and quality activities between suppliers, users and the National Pharmaceutical Database system.

At medical facilities, the selection of drug suppliers, import inspection, storage, prescription and sale of prescription drugs will be the key content. In particular, the inspection work will help detect violations early, promptly take measures to handle and ensure the quality of drugs to patients.

Inspections are carried out directly at facilities according to a regular schedule or by surprise when suspicious signs are detected. However, facilities that have been inspected by the Drug Administration or the Traditional Medicine Administration within the past 12 months, or have been assessed as GPs within the last 6 months, will not be subject to this inspection.

The Department of Health requires the Health Departments of districts, towns and cities to arrange staff to participate in inspection teams, coordinate in handling violations according to their authority and supervise post-inspection corrections. At the same time, these units are responsible for synthesizing, proposing management solutions and developing thematic inspection plans for the year.

The Hanoi Drug, Cosmetic and Food Testing Center is assigned to participate in the inspection and take samples for testing when necessary. The Center will also propose specialized contents related to the management of drug, medicinal herbs and traditional medicine quality at the establishments of use and business.

The Department of Health recommends that pharmaceutical businesses and medical facilities proactively review the drug supply process, ensuring that all drugs purchased and sold have been licensed for circulation and have full legal invoices and documents.

In case of detecting drugs with unusual signs or not yet licensed, units must promptly report and fully prepare related documents to serve the inspection and comparison work.

The 2025 inspection plan demonstrates the determination of the Hanoi health sector in ensuring drug quality, protecting people's rights and health, and enhancing the responsibility of pharmaceutical establishments in the area to comply with the law.
