Graduating in the midst of a revolution to streamline the apparatus, many students studying public administration are worried about their 'output', while also proactively seeking new directions.

Quite worried about the future

4 years ago, student Vu Chi Linh in Hoang Tan ward (Chi Linh city, Hai Duong ) was admitted to the Faculty of State and Law, Academy of Journalism and Propaganda.

Since then, her family and Linh herself have followed their dreams and plans to work in a government agency after graduation. This month, Linh will graduate from the Faculty of State and Law with a major in social management.

Graduating at the right time when state agencies were streamlining their apparatus, administrative units at all levels were merging and rearranging, Ms. Linh and her family were disappointed and worried about the future.

"When I passed the exam and pursued my current major, my family and I planned to apply for a job in a government agency after graduation because this is a stable environment that is suitable for me. This major is very suitable for the conditions and standards to work in a government agency," Linh shared.

With such a goal and hope, in the current context of a temporary suspension of recruitment of civil servants and public employees at state agencies, anxiety is a common feeling among many students preparing to graduate. This is even more difficult for students who have studied majors that are mainly intended to serve in the state environment.

"I find my major quite theoretical while today's students need practical knowledge and skills to meet job requirements after graduation, whether in the public or private environment. However, recent subjects have been enhanced with off-campus practice so that students can have real-life experience. In addition, the school also organizes civic activities and seminars to help students orient their new direction. I am also planning to study for a second degree in economics to create new job opportunities for myself," said Ms. Linh.

This is also a common concern of many students when preparing to graduate and enter the labor market amid the lean revolution.

Turn direction

Worried but unable to procrastinate or depend on others, many students have proactively sought new directions for themselves.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai in Chi Minh commune (Tu Ky), a student of the Faculty of International Politics and Diplomacy, majoring in international relations, Diplomatic Academy, plans to graduate next year and has decided to work in a different field after graduation.

"I have studied communications and economics to supplement. I am also quite worried that my skills, knowledge and experience are not enough to meet the requirements of businesses, so I am trying to take foreign language exams and supplement other knowledge. For those who work in a different field, they may be at a disadvantage compared to those who study in the right field, but in order to survive and develop in an increasingly streamlined job market, I am not afraid to self-study and adapt with the mindset of learning what I don't know and changing what doesn't suit me," Ms. Mai shared.

Ms. Mai also said that she could find a new direction with the mindset of "self-employment" through starting a business, being creative, working freelance... For Ms. Mai, starting a small business or selling what she is good at online sounds risky but is also very practical if no one hires her. She may stumble, but if she dares to learn, dares to think, and dares to do, this is also an attractive door in the increasingly strict labor market for students majoring in public administration.

Ms. Vu Thi Phuong in Tan Viet Commune (Thanh Ha), a student of the Faculty of Public Administration, Thanh Dong University, has also changed her direction. She chose to strive to study and achieve good results so that after graduation, she would be qualified to stay at the school to work as a lecturer.

"We have been guided by our teachers to study hard and achieve good results to be retained at the school as lecturers. If we are not accepted into the state administrative agencies but are able to return to the school to teach after graduation, it is also a good opportunity and a great honor for new graduates," said Ms. Phuong.

In addition to proactively learning and finding a suitable direction, students should not worry too much about job opportunities, whether in the public or private sector. Especially when the State is gradually implementing many innovative policies to attract and promote talents in the future. The current period can be considered a valuable time for students to accumulate more experience and knowledge, preparing for the journey to become officials, civil servants, and public employees according to their wishes.
