The Son Heung-min blackmail case is shocking the Korean public.

Yonhap quoted Judge Yoon Won-mook of the Seoul Central District Court as saying that they issued arrest warrants for a woman in her 20s, identified as Ms. Yang, and a man in his 40s, Mr. Yong, on charges of both tampering with evidence and blackmail.

Ms. Yang, who claims to be Son Heung-min's ex-girlfriend, is accused of sending the player an ultrasound image of a fetus in June 2023 and threatening to make the pregnancy public if she was not paid.

Son Heung-min then transferred around 300 million won (£170,000 or €230,000) to Yang, who signed a non-disclosure agreement. Yong, who later dated Yang, was accused of being involved in the blackmail after learning of her plans.

In March, the man approached Son Heung-min and tried to demand a further 70 million won (around £40,000), but the attempt was unsuccessful.

After Son Heung-min's representative filed a criminal complaint on May 7, Gangnam police in Seoul arrested both suspects on May 14 and requested the two suspects be detained, to prevent them from escaping.

Authorities are now examining the suspects' phones and other confiscated devices to verify the authenticity of the ultrasound images and related documents.

New revelations emerged on May 17 that Yong also sought to make a profit by providing fabricated "fake evidence" about Son Heung-min to journalists.

On April 25, he was accused of sending an email to several reporters, claiming to have sensitive information about the player and offering to pay him. This incident shocked the Korean public and significantly affected the image of Son Heung-min, who is considered a national icon.
