To ensure sufficient coal supply for electricity production, currently, units of the Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group (TKV) are boosting coal production and consumption at the highest level, striving to supply 39.7 million tons of coal for thermal power plants in 2023.
These days, at the coal transportation and processing teams and construction sites of the Hon Gai Coal Selection Company, the production pace is higher than ever. The Company is assigned by TKV to transport, screen, process and consume coal mainly in the Ha Long coal area. In 2023, the Company strives to consume over 11.6 million tons of coal, an increase of 600,000 tons compared to 2022. In addition, the Company will import 900,000 tons of coal for blending and processing.
Since the beginning of 2023, taking advantage of favorable weather conditions, the Company has increased coal collection to increase the recovery rate and consumption of coal types supplied to Quang Ninh Thermal Power Joint Stock Company. In the first quarter of 2023 alone, the Company consumed over 2.7 million tons of coal, reaching more than 23% of the annual plan, of which coal supplied to Quang Ninh Thermal Power Plant reached more than 750,000 tons. It is expected that in the first 6 months of 2023, the Company's coal consumption output will reach 5.9 million tons, reaching over 50% of the annual plan.
According to the leader of Hon Gai Coal Selection Company, in order to prepare enough coal for thermal power plants, the unit has closely followed the management of TKV, committed to providing enough output and types of coal for signed customers, especially coal for thermal power plants. Along with that, the Company is proactively coordinating with Nui Beo Coal, Ha Tu Coal, Ha Lam Coal and Hon Gai Coal to organize coal pulling, purchase mine coal to ensure sufficient quantity, quality, and types suitable for consumption requirements and coal storage capacity. Currently, the unit is increasing imported coal output, serving the work of blending coal to supply to customers, especially thermal power plants.
In order to meet the types of coal on the market, especially coal supplied for electricity production, together with Hon Gai Coal Selection Company, TKV's processing and consumption units, such as Da Bac Logistics Company, Cam Pha Port and Logistics Company, Cua Ong Coal Selection Company, are also focusing on promoting coal blending, processing and consumption plans. For production units, to meet coal consumption, mines are mobilizing maximum resources, boosting production, striving to achieve the highest output. In the first 5 months of 2023 alone, TKV units produced 16.8 million tons of coal; consumed 20.5 million tons of coal. Of which, the coal output supplied to thermal power plants reached 17.1 million tons. It is expected that in June 2023, TKV will strive to exploit about 3.4 million tons of coal and consume 4.6 million tons. Coal output for thermal power plants alone is expected to reach more than 20.9 million tons. Compared to the same period, this is the highest coal consumption for electricity in the past 3 years of TKV.
Previously, in October 2022, to prepare enough coal for thermal power plants, TKV negotiated with thermal power plants to develop a coal consumption plan for 2023. Of which, coal supplied to 22 thermal power plants is 38.52 million tons (equal to 83% of the annual output). To provide enough coal for electricity production, TKV is studying to adjust regulations on coal consumption so that affiliated companies can buy coal for blending. In particular, realizing the high demand for domestic coal consumption, in 2023, TKV has adjusted the expected imported coal output for the whole year to reach nearly 9 million tons of coal. Of which, in the first quarter of 2023, TKV imported about 2.1 million tons; it is expected that in the second quarter of 2023, TKV will import 2.6 million tons.
At the meeting between TKV and EVN (last May), Mr. Dang Thanh Hai, General Director of TKV, affirmed: Providing enough coal for power plants is a key task in 2023 that TKV has committed to the Ministry of Industry and Trade . Implementing the direction of the Government and the direction of the Ministry of Industry and Trade on supplying coal to thermal power plants in the dry months and May, June, July 2023, especially the direction of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh during his working trip to Quang Ninh on June 11, 2023, TKV is boosting production, ensuring coal supply for electricity production, including EVN's thermal power plants. In June and July 2023, TKV will adjust the output supplied to thermal power plants by about 180,000 tons/month, of which EVN plants will supply about 80,000 tons/month, an increase of 6% compared to the progress committed in the contract. It is expected that in 2023, the coal output supplied to thermal power plants will reach 39.7 million tons, an increase of about 15% compared to 2022.
Adjusting the increase in coal output for thermal power plants in the current context will contribute significantly to EVN's production and supply of electricity for economic development and serving people's lives in accordance with the direction of the Prime Minister.
