Muslims from around the world are flocking to Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca - considered the cradle of the religion.

The Muslim Hajj pilgrimage is a journey back to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

Haj is held annually and is considered a religious duty that Muslims must perform at least once in their lifetime if they can afford it.

Pilgrims visit Mount Al-Noor, where they believe the Prophet Mohammad received the first words of the Quran.

Saudi Arabia announced that the Muslim Hajj pilgrimage will begin on June 14.

Hajj consists of a series of rituals completed over at least four days in Mecca and its surroundings in western Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia said about 1.2 million pilgrims from many countries around the world have arrived in Saudi Arabia to attend the Hajj pilgrimage this year.

The Hajj pilgrimage is one of the five pillars of Islam (which include faith, prayer, almsgiving, fasting, and pilgrimage to Mecca).

During the pilgrimage, pilgrims gather in the holy city of Mecca for several days to reminisce about the Prophet Mohammed's final pilgrimage and perform rituals.

Before the ceremony, to represent purity, men all wore simple white robes, regardless of wealth, social status or nationality. Women wore loose white dresses, revealing only their faces and hands.

Pilgrims are not allowed to argue, do not wear perfume, and must keep their nails and hair neatly trimmed.

As the ceremony begins, pilgrims walk seven times around the Kaaba, a 15-meter-high stone structure in Mecca. They then walk seven times between the hills of Al-Safa and Al-Marwah, moving to Mina, an area 5 kilometers away, before taking part in the main ritual on Mount Arafat.

The main ceremony takes place on June 15, when pilgrims gather to pray on Mount Arafat, where the Prophet Mohammed delivered his last sermon.
